This review is from: With Courage and Common Sense: Memoirs from the Older Women's Legacy Circles (Paperback)
This is a delightful book filled with short (1-2 pages) memories written by women involved in a Story Circle Project in Texas. They are organized by type so it is easy to see what kind of story-memories might be included in a particular catagory. There are stories from women raised in the city and on the farm, during peace and wartime, and at different stages of their lives. Really, it was hard to put down: I wanted to read just one more and I found myself picking it up at free moments throughout the day.
There is a reference to a handbook offered by this organization (Storycircle.org $10 including shipping), which provides story prompts for anyone thinking of recording a story for family members. While you might think that you have nothing that anyone would like to read, just imagine your excitement if you were to find a short memory written by your grand-mother, say, tucked in a box in the attic. It would be a real treasure just to be in her mind for those pages. Story Circle also offers on-line classes to help with getting started and shaping your memories. This book of short memoirs is a treasure. I bought three copies to send to friends. |
