4.0 out of 5 stars This is the first movie that try to tell the story of a
very attractive and talented Creole woman named Henriette Delille, who chose the rigors of convent life over a very comfortable placage with a wealthy white benefactor who could gave her the world if she wants it. She saw the evil in placage and didn't want any part of it because it would be against God's law against living in sin. She seen it firsthand with her...

1.0 out of 5 stars So-so at best
This is one of those movies that extoll the lives of the religious in a totally unrealistic and boring fashion. Not that I have anything against religiously-inclined people - it's just that the portrayal of them on screen is generally a snore. One can't help but get the impression from these epics that the individual turned to religion because they lacked a personality...

very attractive and talented Creole woman named Henriette Delille, who chose the rigors of convent life over a very comfortable placage with a wealthy white benefactor who could gave her the world if she wants it. She saw the evil in placage and didn't want any part of it because it would be against God's law against living in sin. She seen it firsthand with her parents. Her father wanted out of it so he could marry a white woman in order to have legitimate offspring while her mother slowly goes insane not only of her lover's abandonment but also of her daughter's refusal to follow her footsteps in taking a white lover without being married.

All her life, Henriette deLille devoted her life to helping the poor and enslaved of Louisiana, even going against the authorities to do so. It's not an easy life to live but it's a purposeful one. One that emphasize a life of service and devotion to spiritual matters.

Vanessa L. Williams has done a great job in portraying Henriette Delille.

Courage to love provides a fascinating insight to a little known period in Louisiana's history. A period when free women of colour were groomed by their mothers for the sole purpose of finding a rich man to take care of them- though due to Louisiana law, were unable to marry. Venessa Williams gives a good performance as a "gens de colour." I highly recommend.

Henriette Delille's story is heart warming. Her courage amazing. Vanessa Williams does a great job of capturing the spirit of Henriette. Worth watching for a quick lesson in the life and times of a modern day Saint. A Servant of Slaves: The Life of Henriette Delilleis great for more fictionalized information. The Subversive Power of Love: The Vision of Henriette Delille (The Madeleva Lecture Series)is for fact based adult reading and Servant to the Slaves: The Story of Henriette Delille (Weaver Book.) is for Kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Historic movie..., May 14, 2009

Great movie!
A basically true adaptation of an almost FORGOTTEN, and very historical time in U.S. history! I appreciated the authenticity of the movie, except the fact that I didn't really see any TRUE Creole actors in the movie. There is a really HUGE difference, in being "biracial" or a light skinned African American person and being a "true" FRENCH CREOLE person... A BIG difference! We are of African, Indian, Spanish and French blood to be exact. But, over all, the beautiful Vanessa Williams played a fantastic part in this story of love and loss. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in understanding this very rich culture, that I very proud to be a part of...

I like Vanessa Williams' acting anyway. I think she did a great job! The plot was pretty good, although the movie could have been a little longer. For that, I give it 4 stars.

This was a great movie with Vanessa Williams in main role. Ole Louisiana traditions that not everybody agreed on. Make for a good viewing.
