very attractive and talented Creole woman named Henriette Delille, who chose the rigors of convent life over a very comfortable placage with a wealthy white benefactor who could gave her the world if she wants it. She saw the evil in placage and didn't want any part of it because it would be against God's law against living in sin. She seen it firsthand with her parents. Her father wanted out of it so he could marry a white woman in order to have legitimate offspring while her mother slowly goes insane not only of her lover's abandonment but also of her daughter's refusal to follow her footsteps in taking a white lover without being married.

All her life, Henriette deLille devoted her life to helping the poor and enslaved of Louisiana, even going against the authorities to do so. It's not an easy life to live but it's a purposeful one. One that emphasize a life of service and devotion to spiritual matters.

Vanessa L. Williams has done a great job in portraying Henriette Delille.

Henriette Delille's story is heart warming. Her courage amazing. Vanessa Williams does a great job of capturing the spirit of Henriette. Worth watching for a quick lesson in the life and times of a modern day Saint. A Servant of Slaves: The Life of Henriette Delilleis great for more fictionalized information. The Subversive Power of Love: The Vision of Henriette Delille (The Madeleva Lecture Series)is for fact based adult reading and Servant to the Slaves: The Story of Henriette Delille (Weaver Book.) is for Kids.

Courage to love provides a fascinating insight to a little known period in Louisiana's history. A period when free women of colour were groomed by their mothers for the sole purpose of finding a rich man to take care of them- though due to Louisiana law, were unable to marry. Venessa Williams gives a good performance as a "gens de colour." I highly recommend.

I read about this movie and then it aired on television recently, the first week of September 2012, and I watched it. I don't want to criticize the actors, but the costumes were amazing. The subject matter, criminalizing interracial relationships was difficult to see on film, but all too true a piece of American history. Still, I was more intrigued by Henriette's allegiance to God and the French doctor's challenge of grappling with the concept of God when he was more invested in science. Being an interracial couple is one thing, but being unequally yoked is another. According to Scripture their union would not be proper because of Henriette's faith and the doctor's seemingly disbelief in God, as nice as he was. Had they both been the same religion they would be "one in the Spirit" and that unity could help them overcome prejudices through prayer as opposed to relying strictly on the law to save them. Just a thought.
