Courage to Pray, by Anthony Bloom and George Lefebvre is quite good in my estimation. The first part, written by Anthony Bloom reads like a devotional with an emphasis on prayer as a way to theosis, or divinization (a concept which intrigues me in that is it similar to the Catholic idea of union with God, and in my view similar to realization or enlightenment). The book is divided into two parts, the first is written by Bloom,an orthodox priest, and the second part is written by George Lefebvre, a Benedictine monk. The second part of the book concentrates on us accepting ourselves as we are and accepting that God made us as we are for his own good and ours, that we need to go to God even when it feels like we are alone and when we are in pain, and that God is fully present at all times regardless how we feel at the moment. The book reads easy and is a joy to ponder. I have taken some of the themes into meditation and it has been a great help with clearing my mind. Bloom has written a few other books on prayer and with much anticipation, I am ordering a couple from Amazon.

This book combines the seemingly incompatible: it is spiritual, practical and amusing to read at the same time. The author has years of experience of meeting God in prayer and he shares it with you in a way that makes you feel God so close that the moment you put the book down you want to try...

I have read many books on the subject of prayer, but this book is by far the best. I keep returning to the first section, written by Anthony Bloom, an Orthodox Bishop, over and over and over again. The second half of the book, written by Benedictine monk, George LeFebvre, is very moving but more elementary. I highly recommend Courage to Pray.
