Book Description

January 2, 2005

You’re probably familiar with the old saying, once bitten, twice shy. It describes a painful uncertainty many of us feel every day as we try to engage with other people. Acts of betrayal from our pasts can lead us into long cycles of wariness and mistrust. An inability to trust wisely can lead us to loneliness and isolation, or worse—putting our trust in the wrong people too easily.

The good news is that the ability to trust is both a choice and a skill that you can develop. You do not have to be controlled by the past. To a child, trust is a feeling that comes and goes, always under the influence of other people. Only as an adult can you learn how and when to trust more wisely. This book is a warm and friendly guide to achieving greater self-confidence and deeper levels of intimacy and trust.

Helped along by the book’s exercises and ideas for self-reflection, you’ll begin to develop new patterns of trust. Start by getting comfortable trusting your own instincts. Then, experiment with developing relationships based on mutual trust and curiosity. Learn from and then let go of old betrayals that have impaired your trust-building skills, and approach the rest of your life with a renewed sense of purpose and belonging.

I was born in Santa Rosa, CA in 1948. After earning a BA in Community Studies at UC Santa Cruz, I moved to Alaska for a year. Too cold for a California girl. Then injuries from a car accident helped me see my path: to help others seek positive change from difficult experiences.

The Masters program in Social Work at UC Berkeley has given me the experience and license for a private practice, and I now live on the Mendocino coast of northern California with my husband of 30 years, Marshall Rogers. In 2006, a remarkable 12 year old named Peter Alexander Norman Clere Dorn Ravlin, who is an aspiring filmmaker (with one zombie movie already done)was added to our family after the loss of his own.

For 35 years I've worked as a social worker and therapist, volunteering with hospice, Red Cross, and bereaved parents. My own background has given me absolute confidence that anyone can overcome addiction and childhood abuse, and make big changes to achieve desired goals.

My book, "The Courage to Trust: a guide to deep and lasting relationships," (2005) shows how to find trust in yourself and speak with compassion and honesty. My tape (mp3 file), "Embracing True Prosperity", is based on my own evidence that believing in a positive future will bring out the meaning and purpose of your life, just as it did in mine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Learning to be trustworthy, April 25, 2006
By
This review is from: The Courage to Trust: A Guide to Building Deep and Lasting Relationships (Paperback)
I recently had someone come back into my life that I lied to by omission. Our second time around he was having trouble trusting me. I told a white lie and he blew up. I was sitting there scratching my head thinking what's his problem. I decided to order some books about trust to get a handle on my issue with lying. This book has shown me why I choose to not be truthfull all the time. I am trying to protect myself from how I think the person will react by knowing the truth. I'm not trustfull or trustworthy. I this book is really helping me see a better way to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars A primer on trust, January 18, 2006
This review is from: The Courage to Trust: A Guide to Building Deep and Lasting Relationships (Paperback)
The issue of trust -- of others and of myself -- comes up all the time. Whom do I really trust, and how do I build trust with people whom I would like to trust more? How much can I safely let back in people who have betrayed my trust in the past? What moves can I make that will make me more trustworthy? Cynthia Wall's exercises are often helpful in clarifying underlying blocks, allowing me to go much deeper into the real issues.

I am in a process of exploring this issue with my women's group this year; it's a very rich and scary topic. The Courage to Trust is a valuable, compassionate guide for us in this exploration. I think anyone who has ever been betrayed or disappointed by someone will find helpful support in this beautifully and thoughtfully written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Elegant Book, January 31, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Courage to Trust: A Guide to Building Deep and Lasting Relationships (Paperback)

As a psychotherapist and devoted reader I am always looking for books to recommend that simply, clearly, and effectively communicate how we can live our lives with greater freedom. Cynthia Wall has written an elegant book. Her warm voice guides us throught terrain that we may never have attempted to travel without her wise and kind encouragement. And she leads us in such a way that, amazingly!, it's not all that hard, and (really) not too scary. The exercises are great - small, doable steps. Any book I truly value accompanies me to the beach, the coffee house and (if it's really good and useful) to the bathtub. My copy of this book is water logged; the highest possible praise.
