This was a required read for a college class, but has soon turned into one of my favorites. Dr. Hindson has a true God given talent to bring the beautiful stories and lessons of the Old Testament to life. His pure and easy word flow only adds to this treasure of a book.

I really enjoyed this book because it provides a guided, in-depth yet fairly brief look at the culture and issues surrounding Old Testament figures such as Jacob, etc. If you are looking for an overview of Old Testament heroes along with life application learning points, then this book is for you. I used this book during a Bible Study, and it was excellent for that use.

This was a required textbook for and Old Testament Survey class I took. Hindson has a way of bringing the OT characters to life and giving you some insight into the more personal aspects of Bible characters. He is very good at helping you to apply biblical stories to your life. The book is enjoyable and easy to read. I would recommend it for someone teaching a teen or adult sunday school class. It would make a great guide and offers good discussion points at the end of each chapter. To help you I would also recommend watching Hindson's lectures on Old Testament Survey in iTunes University, they coincide with this book. He is insightful and very entertaining. You'll find yourself laughing and taking notes at the same time.
If you are an intermediate to advanced student you probably wouldn't gain much from the book but still may enjoy the read.

This is a very elemental work. Did not contain the historical detail I was expecting based on the description of the work. This would be OK for a Sunday School study but don't expect an in depth discussion of characters or events.

This is a great book. It really makes you look at things in a way you probably never looked at them before. It goes into detail about the character's life, and at the same time tells what the customs were at that time, and why they were acceptable, or unusual. It also goes into the character's emotions, and feelings, and compares them to our own. Each chapter in the book is a different character of the old testament, and each character is faced with different situations that everybody can relate to. This book corasponds 100% with the Bible.

This was required reading for my OT Survey Class. My prof was, of course, Dr. Hindson. This is an excellent book as a standalone and provides great insight into Biblical culture and customs. It really puts some real life perspective behind what we seem to refer to as "stories". As a college textbook in conjunction with the course, it did not do much to further or illumine my understanding.
