Book Description

January 31, 2004
Sometimes Moustafa and Special, The Couriers, run guns. Yeah, it's not the most admirable job in the world to take on, but they got rent to pay and ammo to buy, and M has acquired a rather expensive new hobby: building the ultimate motocross dirtbike from scratch. But their latest gig goes bad... all kinds of wrong... and it ticks 'em off. They head to upstate New York to track the guns to the source to and get a little vengeance and get P-A-I-D in the process. Ever been to these half-dead New York towns? The slow economy hits hard up there, and the streets are dead on a weekend, and half the shops are boarded up. Lots of pissed off people with too much time on their hands, and half of 'em own guns... don't need two young arrogant punks from The City to roll into town like they own the place...

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Couriers, whose second graphic-novel adventure this is, are young urban mercenaries ("yummies"?) Moustafa and Special (a female), who deliver stuff you just can't give to any bike messenger-- drugs, weapons, various kinds of payoff-- because bike messengers are gonna freak when the recipients pull heat on 'em and say they'll keep delivery and payment or return merchandise, so to speak, and oh, yeah, you (the messenger) won't be going to the next client--ever. This scenario unfolds early here, but Moustafa, Special, and Ryan handle it perfectly, with bullets and big-ass four-wheel-drive pickups. 'Cept Ryan gets killed. Tracing the killers to redneck territory upstate (New York), our two lethal slick city-zens head north. Mostly chasing and fighting (with guns, knives, fists, whatever), this opus might be fairly boring as a movie but is pretty impressive here, thanks to Rob G's way--in black and white, yet--with smeared lines for speed, glowing light effects, and cloud, mist, and dust effects that give a subtle 3-D look whenever he uses them. More About the Author

Brian Wood released his first graphic novel, Channel Zero, in 1997 to considerable critical acclaim and has continued to create at a brisk pace ever since. Focusing almost entirely on creator-owned projects, he's become one of the most important indie creators of the last decade. He's earned multiple Eisner Award nominations and editions of his work have been published in close to a dozen foreign markets. Currently under an exclusive contract for DC/Vertigo, Wood continues to write his unique brand of iconoclastic creator-owned work with DMZ, Northlanders, Demo and The New York Four.

5.0 out of 5 stars The rednecks had it coming, February 12, 2007

This review is from: The Couriers 02: Dirtbike Manifesto (Paperback)
Another great book from Brian Wood. The Couriers (and other books in Brian Wood's NYC centric universe) delivers more of that sharp, funny action that he's known for. Special and Mustafa on a revenge mission vs. mercenary rednecks? It's as good as it sounds!
