Book Description

February 2002
The only woman's guide to using golf in business.

Playing golf has long been used by businessmen to advance their careers, but many women are just warming up to the notion of using the game to get ahead. As the only golf book focusing on women who "need to know golf" to succeed at work, On Course for Business contains tips, techniques, and hints that will help the approximately 5.5 million women golfers use the golf course for business and career advancement. This book offers practical advice on business golf for both novice and experienced women golfers that can't be found anywhere else. As women advance further into traditional "male" fields, they will be looking for a guide that addresses this specific need. Suzanne Woo simply explains the role of golf in business, and shows how women can take advantage of this business ritual now.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Suzanne Woo is a golf guru who knows her stuff, down to the finest detail:
* Carry your bag, play for two hours - burn 680 calories.
* Use an electric cart - 400 calories
* Shop 'til you drop for two hours - just 300 calories
Woo enjoys the game and showing women how to make it work for them, hence their new book, On Course For Business (John Wiley & Sons, $18.95).
Woo took up golf in law school because she envisioned it as an important tool in the workplace. Fifteen years later, she's a lawyer and founder of San Francisco-based BizGolf Dynamics. She leads workshops and seminars with corporate clients, spelling out the scariest parts of the game.
She knows the numbers games: How many women take up golf then quit in frustration. On Course is like a workbook, with chapters, lists and goals clearly defined. The basic rules of golf are in the appendix.
She tells her groups that golf is not an us-against-them game but a chance for camaraderie. She'll explain the equipment and tackles the terms and etiquette of golf. "The green and tee are where you offend people because you're closer together."
Most important, she talks about learning to enjoy the game. "People are not going to remember that you're not a great golfer." Master that, and the rest of the stuff, such as corporate outings and tournaments, become a day in the park. (USA TODAY, June 11, 2002)

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for women in business, April 11, 2002

This review is from: On Course for Business: Women and Golf (Paperback)
Last week I finished reading On Course for Business, just in time. This week I had a golf game with a new client and my management. As a very novice golfer, I was nervous, but the book showed me it isn't about golf swings. By knowing the etiquette rules - very important in golf - I was confident on the course. More importantly, the book taught me how to observe the behavior of my golfing partners and judge how they will behave in business. It definitely works. I was surprised at how much I was able to learn about my company's new client, both professionally and personally. I also made stronger connections with my management, which I know will help around review time. The book is well written, with a sense of humor and understanding of business issues women face. It's easy to take the information and apply it immediately. If you want to set yourself apart, and confidently work and play with the big boys, read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Business Development Guide for Women, May 29, 2002
By
This review is from: On Course for Business: Women and Golf (Paperback)
What an amazing book! Women have been left out, or behind, far too long in busines, in large part because they don't realize or appreciate how important golf is in American business. This book provides practical, understandable information on etiquette, playing rules, and business savvy. It's THE guide for women who want more confidence on the course, and who want to use golf to find, build and strengthen important business relationships. Thank you, Ms. Woo, for this much needed, beautifully written book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Play or stay, April 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: On Course for Business: Women and Golf (Paperback)
As a woman in management, I attend many conferences and seminars each year. In 90% of the events I attend, there is always at least one day set aside for the game of golf. Well, I never played golf before. Therefore, typically, I would sit around waiting for my friends to return from the game.

After a while, I discovered that there were numerous discussions held during the game. Valuable tips and industry insights were exchanged while playing golf, and I was totally left out of the loop. I wanted to learn to play golf but felt intimidated by the game. After reading this book, I gained lots of invaluable information, and actually found the courage to take up golfing. The next time I attend a conference, I will be right out there with my colleagues "talking shop" on course.
