Francis Lai's melancholy masterpiece..., June 21, 2010
This review is from: La Course Du Lievre a Travers Les Champs (Audio CD)
Francis Lai wrote some very popular, iconic themes in the 60's and 70's, but LA COURSE DU LIEVRE A TRAVERS LES CAMPS (aka AND HOPE TO DIE) is his true masterpiece. Lai performs the vocal version himself, and it's a complex melody full of noirish melancholia. The rest of the score ranges from sinister underscoring to ironic march music, and features solo pan flute work by Zamfir. When all is said and done, though, it's the main theme vocal and instrumental that makes this masterwork one of the most beautiful film compositions of all time. This Milan compact disc release is now quite valuable and generally out of reach; there's a French LP version released by Phillips at the time of the film's original engagements. Most will have to obtain the theme on one of Lai's compilation albums.
