More About the Author

Born and raised in Ohio, I yearn for the sunshine and deserts of Arizona! Until my dream is achieved, I peacefully reside in the midwest. Since 1999, I've been happily teaching composition and literature, as well as developing new courses, at a local community college, and hold the title of Associate Professor, English. A published poet and essayist, I now have my first novel published! And I have under review some short stories and poems this year as well.

I've always wanted a large family, and boy do I have one...of the animal and aviary kind, all rescued! With my partner, we have a Greyhound, a Boxer-Saluki, a Budgie, a geriatric Lab-Corgi mix [can you picture this?], and an extremely old black cat. Oh, and did I mention I've got two beautiful stepdaughters as well?

Familiar with this poem, allegedly by Emerson, titled "Success"? "To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people, and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." At heart, I'm a Transcendentalist with a strong Native American spirituality, and I hope, if I'm to be judged at all, to be measured by the spirit of this poem and philosophy!

Laugh...Love...Live...Be good to yourself and others!

Peace!

The plot twists in this tantalizing murder mystery are somewhat reminiscent of the work of Agatha Christie. Although the tale jumps back and forth between the present and the past--a tricky technique, to say the least--the result is suspense, rather than confusion, for readers as the layers of the plot's complexity are peeled away and new complexities are revealed. Katrina is a particularly well-defined character, but I'd like to have seen a bit more depth to several of the others. The contrasting settings of Cleveland and Bonds Cay, an idyllic private island in the Bahamas, are deftly rendered. And then there's love. . . There is a lot packed into this novella!

This was a great read! The characters were very well developed, the plot was intriguing and I enjoyed the local references to my hometown. Even though it is classed as a novella- I felt like I was reading a complete 400 page mystery/suspense novel. Very well balanced story with interesting, yet flawed cast of characters. I read it in one sitting because I had to know what was going to happen next! I could picture further development of a couple of the characters in another book!

Exactly the right length to take to the beach but don't be misled into thinking there's not much there -- the author achieves the novella length by writing spare and compact prose, a skill we wish more writers would develop. The effect, as another reviewer has mentioned, is that you feel that you've read a full length mystery novel. Take it to the beach and you'll get both a good tan and a good read.

Just finished reading this novella. I am going to depend on others to give you the plot and just say WOW. This is a short read packed with suspense. It flips from present to past but you never lose track or get confused. Do yourself a favor and give this a read. I do not think you will be sorry.
