Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An intriguing premise animates this strong and affecting psychological thriller set in the aftermath of WWII. Liberated from Dachau, an amnesiac man whose number tattoo has been surgically removed from his arm takes the name of Josef Neumann. During the course of this narrative, he recovers his identity as Paul Krenek and tracks down the SS murderers of his twin brother and mildly retarded little sister. Allington (The Fox in the Field) takes big risks here, and, despite some twists that strain credulity, for the most part pulls them off. Alina Levin, a Jewish physician tormented by guilt over the barbarous medical experiments she was ordered to perform on fellow prisoners at Auschwitz, marries Paul after the war and accompanies him to Brazil. There he confronts his former friend, Nazi doctor Georg Viertel, a cultivated killer who coolly rationalizes the Nazis' mass murder of people deemed "mental defectives." The plot then moves backward in time: to Athens, where Paul, a student spending two years abroad on the eve of the war, spurns his German girlfriend, Leni (who ends up marrying Georg); to Switzerland, where Paul and his sister Liesl are arrested by the Gestapo; to an SS colonel's estate near Bergen-Belsen, where Ernst, Paul's twin, an artist imprisoned by the Nazis, forges Modiglianis and Braques. Indeed, from his story line of Nazis and stolen art, Allington deftly hangs the threads of forgery, the theme of true and false identity, as war criminals adopt new personas and as Paul tries to figure out who he really is.

Review

In the days immediately following the conclusion of World War II, a survivor of the Dachau concentration camp is haunted by his experiences and the loss of his own identity (his tattooed serial number has been surgically removed; his memory is gone) as he searches for retribution and for the answer to his connection to the mysterious painting "The Court of Blue Shadows. " Accompanying him is a beautiful woman tortured by the memory of her own experiences in the camps. Set in the historical reality of SS medical atrocities and the Odessa apparatus organized for war criminals' escape, The Court of Blue Shadows leads the reader from the ruins of postwar Germany to the Amazon jungle. Maynard Allington's well-researched account of the conditions of those dark days is sure to captivate. The Court of Blue Shadows is must-reading the spy/thriller audience, as well as anyone interested in World War II adventure and intrigue. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Thriller!, July 30, 2002

Aleta Bressette (Rockledge, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Court of Blue Shadows: A Novel (Hardcover)
"The Court of Blue Shadows" is, without question, one of the best thrillers pertaining to the tragic events of the Holocaust that I have read. Maynard Allington uses vivid imagery, accurate historical data, and brilliant plot development to skillfully weave a story that is very difficult to put down.

The story's protagonist, who suffers from a case of trauma induced amnesia, gradually uncovers the shocking truths about his recent past. Although he was once a member of the German elite, he is shaken to the core to discover how his Jewish roots have taken him on a horrifying journey he never thought imaginable. As such, the reader is drawn by the page turning suspense of learning the truth about the hero's past as well as what these truths will drive him to accomplish in his uncertain future.

This emotionally gripping novel has everything: suspense, action, brilliant character development, historical value, and even psychological value. Allington's imaginative story line and gifted prose definitely kept this reader captivated with "The Court of Blue Shadows."

1.0 out of 5 stars Solid Plot, but the author doesn't pull it off, August 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Court of Blue Shadows: A Novel (Hardcover)
Allington comes up with a excellent plot idea, however his prose fails to capture the reader into the time and place of the events. Also the dialog sounds tacky. Again the story is solid; after a couple more drafts, who knows?
