This book is surprisingly of the romance genre. I wanted to read it initially because I thought it was another of Christianna Brand's Inspector Cockerill books. But this book is far from that! Yes, it is a romance, but it's a romance like none you've ever read before! The book is full of surprises right up until the end. The book is set during the reign of King George II in England. It all starts with a mysterious and beautiful titled lady who is capturing the hearts of men in London. She is mysterious and no one knows where she comes from. It turns out that she is not a rich titled lady, but a poor, earthy and endearingly calculating girl who is seeking a rich benefactor. Her name is Gilda, and she finally accepts a rich nobleman for a husband, but finds out that he's not who he says he is anymore than she is who she says she is. I will not outline anymore of the plot, but it is surprisingly wonderful. Be prepared for a very wild ride with this book! Enjoy!
