4.0 out of 5 stars Check-Out This GEM!!
So many times I rent/buy big budget studio films only to get burned. It forces me to look around at some titles I may not be so familiar with in the hopes of discovering a gem. With COURTING COURTNEY I struck GOLD! The film's plot bogs down at points, and it looks (is?) low budget indie. But the performances by KATHY GRIFFIN, DANA GOULD, TAYLOR NEGRON, CHRIS...

3.0 out of 5 stars Aren't we just supposed to be friends?
I enjoyed Courting Courtney.

Though I may just be biased because I have been a fan of Dana Gould for about 4 years. Late bloomer in that department I know. This movie attracts indie flimmakers, bleeding heart 20somethings, "nice" guys, "nice" girls and the classic guy/gal... ain't we just friends? Okay it is bare bones, but that is grand in...

It has the feeling of a play. Hey you will recognize some names in the cast, so there.

Get the film, get a bag o' snacks, grab your other half and be glad that's done or drown your empathetic heart into the chocolate bar ya just bought.

I only wonder if Mr. Tarantino has been taking notes on my life! CHECK IT OUT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Festival Gold, January 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Courting Courtney (DVD)
I first saw this film at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 1997, having spent quite a bit of time at festivals stuck watching films that seemingly have no intention in doing what I believe films are meant to do first and foremost - entertain. Then, due to a last minute schedule change, I happened upon this film COURTING COURTNEY and what a lucky twist of fate it was. This film has charm to spare and never forgets it's primary objective - to keep the audience engaged! After the screening, filmmaker Paul Tarantino spoke and was every bit as entertaining as his film. So many times these festival gems are lost in the distribution shuffle so I was glad to see it being released at all much less on DVD...with audio commentary! The film itself is a treasure of amusing characters. But I can tell you as a veteran of the film business and as an aspiring filmmaker that the commentary is priceless to other would-be filmmakers working with no budget but boatloads of passion. And Tarantino's jovial personality rings out - he should appear in one of his future films. Reportedly made for under $30,000 the film looks and feels far beyond it's budget and contains many recognizable faces including: KATHY GRIFFIN, RYAN STILES, JULIA SWEENEY, and ANA GASTEYER. To be sure this gem is not without it's blemishes - the story is fairly predictable, and some of the acting is standard sit-com, but it delivers lots of laughs and heart - and who can get enough of that? I would normally give the film a 4 star rating but opted here for 5 because of the commentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine Wit., March 2, 2005
This review is from: Courting Courtney (DVD)
This is one of the cleverest, wittiest films that I've ever seen. The first time I saw it in the video store I almost didn't rent it but I ended up loving it and laughed from beginning to end. It's a hilarious send up of dating as told through the lense of Courtney, a woman who's just turned 29 years old. She is still in search of true love and marriage and the director of the documentary is her best friend who happens to be in love with her. It is very post-sexual revolution as she yearns for all of the traditional things but is miles from being a virgin or pure in any way. Courting Courtney is one of the rare DVDs that you could watch twice in a row. All the segments are great and it's a sophisticated, exquisite form of humor--at least if you ask me. The ending's a surprise as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Indie Film Collection - MUST HAVE!, January 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Courting Courtney [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A light breezy romantic comedy with a lot of heart and laughs. The cast is amazing considering the budget. I cought it a few times on SUNDANCE CHANNEL and finally bought the DVD...it's worth it not just for the movie but for the commentary with Paul Tarantino, Larry Sher, and the films distributor. If you're interested in going down the indie trail this is a must have for the collection. It's funny and inspiring to hear how this film got made. I'm not 100% sure what it takes to "steal a location" but evidently Tarantino did it with reckless abandon and amazing success! Look for KATHY GRIFFIN, JULIA SWEENEY, CHRIS HARDWICK, TAYLOR NEGRON, ANA GASTEYER, RYAN STILES, DANA GOULD, JOHN ENNIS and more...all can be found here seemingly moments before they became successful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film to watch again and again, March 2, 2004
This review is from: Courting Courtney [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I first saw this film when it screened at the Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival and I was very impressed. I'm not normally into comedies, but it was an absolute joy to watch this film and get caught up in the unique storyline and the fine performances Mr. Tarantino brought out of his fantastic cast. For Independent Filmmakers, this is a MUST SEE. You'll be amazed at the production values this great director was able to get out of a $20,000 budget. Absolutely amazing! Check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars COURTING COURTNEY REVIEW, December 13, 1999
By
This review is from: Courting Courtney [VHS] (VHS Tape)
For a first feature Paul Tarintino couldn't have done a better job. This film, which only had a budget of roughly 20,000 dollars, features an amazing cast, and is filled with laughs.

The film follows Nick (Dana Gould)as he makes a documentary about his best friend Courtney (who he happens to be madly in love with).

The film has several "classic" moments, and will forever be included in my DVD collection.

The special features on this DVD, including an AUDIO COMMENTARY and the TRAILER, are also great for the film buffs.

All in all, even if your not an "indy film" fan, you'll flip over this romantic comedy from Toasted Films.

The acting is terrible, the script is contrived, the lead characters aren't likable, and the dialogue is not funny. Also, the "great moments" are a direct ripoff from "When Harry Met Sally".
