Original, fascinating plot, full of passionate undercurrents,
By A Customer
This review is from: Courting Julia (Signet Regency Romance) (Paperback)
Julia's step-grandfather, the old Earl, leaves his family well provided for when he dies. All, that is, except for JULIA who faces the prospect of penury UNLESS she marries one of the Earl's five nephews within one month The prospect of gaining rich properties and land promised to whoever becomes her husband ensures that she is courted assiduously by her step-cousins, each for his own, selfish, reasons. This novel has well-sketched, and interesting characters that make the unusual plot credible. It bristles throughout with suspense and barely suppressed passion.

Sigh!,

I am quite undone. This was one of the best romance I ever read in... well... ever. This is a story about a rather powerful love/hate relationship among two step-cousins. Daniel is always a stickler for propriety while Julia is bent on enjoying life to the fullest. As a child Julia was always smitten with Daniel and tried in her own childish ways to win his approval. Nevertheless, Daniel did disapprove of her and never had any qualms about showing her how much. Yet there is no denying that he cares for her as he keeps stepping in to protect her from herself. And, of course, the Passion is there. It was a fascinating story and one that I would recommend to anyone.

I took a little break from reading Harlequin Presents to read a Regency Romance. I have read other books of this era but its been awhile. Needless to say it was very enjoyable. The heroine, Julia was feisty and headstrong and adventurous and just a lot of fun. She had no problems speaking her mind and defying convention. The hero, Daniel, was handsome, rich, titled, serious and brooding. Definitely opposites right? But he put his hair down later thanks to the heroine, although I'm not sure I believe that Daniel can immediately change his "stuffy" principles. But love changes everyone and he does have a "good teacher" hehe. It was also nice to see a little bit of the personalities of the four other rivals. I think the growing romance between the two characters was believable. Highly recommended!

This is my first book by Mary Balogh. I've never known a romance writer who can write so well, except Jane Austen. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it.

Not one of Ms. Balogh's best,
By A Customer
This review is from: Courting Julia (Signet Regency Romance) (Paperback)
Ms. Balogh is one of my favourite writers for regency novels but this is indoubtly not one of her best as the heroine is somewhat boring (because it seems that she doesn't really know what she wants), and so is the hero. There are too many peopole involved in the plot. The whole plot is not very convincing anyway: a girl has to choose her husband from her five cousins because it was her grandfather's last will. Though: still better than most other regency novels. I'd say, only read it if you haven't got any other Mary Balogh books at hand.

A true Mary Balogh fan. Have read most of her books, some exceptional to reread over and over again, the majority with pleasure, some where the "hero" is so arrogant thats you want to hit him with something hard over the head, but only a few with disappointment. This is a book you read with pleasure. The book where the lovely Julia is left by her loving step-grandfaher to choose one of his five close relatives , otherwise she will most likely get a dreary life somewhere. If she marries, her husband will get her beloved home. This is a tricky situation. The five manly realtives are all pretty different and it is interesting to get to know them and why or why not they want to want to marry eachother. I found the heroine fun and loving and she made a god show of the book. Read it !

Got better at the end,

I really struggled with this book at the beginning - it took quite a while to get into it. But toward the end it picked up, and I really enjoyed the ending. It's not one of Balogh's best, but enjoyable all the same.

I am a huge fan of Mary Balogh and have been spending big bucks collecting all of her early works. I read a lot of good reviews about this book, but I was not impressed.
Julia and Daniel are opposites. Dan is strict and can't stand Julia's reckless childish nature. Julia has been given the option of choosing between five step cousins to marry, and she doesn't even consider marrying Daniel. But, as time goes by he seems to be the only one worth having. If only they could have a conversation with out arguing. This book lacks a sex scene which is necessary for a romance novel. The characters are not all that likable, and I didn't find myself believing they loved each other. They fought constantly, and didn't seem to have a healthy relationship. I would have liked for there to have been an epilogue. I did enjoy reading about Freddie, one of the nephews, who was given his own wonderful story, Dancing with Clara.

Great Regency characters in an entertaining book.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Courting Julia (Signet Regency Romance) (Paperback)
This is an exceptional Regency (as most of Mary Blough's are) that has a host of characters both entertaining and interesting. They're all at their Uncles former home in the country for the reading of his unusual Last Will & Testimate. After a crazy few weeks, true love triumphs and they live happily everafter...after all, this IS a Regency:) But what about everyone else? You'll want to read more about them all. The only book that I know of featuring one of the characters in this book is Dancing with Clara by (of course)Mary Bough. If anyone knows of anoyher PLEASE let me know. READ THIS BOOK!!!!

I enjoyed this book; Julia faces a difficult situation bravely and there are some very funny moments. But in the book I read Richard was the new Earl and definately NOT a rake. Freddy was another cousin.
