Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Whether you've read my books in the past or are still trying to decide whether they're something you'd like to read, I'm glad you're here. It's readers like you that have made all my crazy dreams--you know the ones that everyone said were impossible--come true. You are the ones who keep me writing, keep me inspired, keep me sane. And for that, I owe you a gigantic thank you.

You see, I started writing as a way to feel a little less lonely in this far too impersonal world. Since then, I've made it my mission to write and talk about the issues facing today's youth, the issues that are often overlooked in entertainment because they're conceived as gritty, taboo, or simply "too depressing."

In the Farsighted Series, I tackle topics like racism, self-esteem and eating disorders, physical disabilities, and teen substance abuse.

In the Bird Brain Books, the lessons are far simpler--remember to say thank you when someone does something nice for you, know that who you are is what makes you special rather than what you look like, appreciate love, friendship, and beauty where ever you can find it.

I've connected with some amazing people who share my same outlook on today's literary landscape, and I've made fantastic friends in the process. At the end of the day, I love hearing from people who've read my books, and I welcome emails, Facebook messages, tweets--any way you'd like to get in touch with me, it just makes my day.

Every now and then, I like to reach out to readers with free Advance Review Copies or other giveaways on my site, and I'm planning to do so much more of that in 2013. To keep up with these opportunities, please come on over and subscribe to my newsletter at EmlynChand.com/contact.

You can also email me at author@emlynchand.com or find me on Facebook, Twitter, or GoodReads. I look forward to hearing from you!

This book is so stinkin' cute. My kiddos loved it. The illustrations are fun and really captivated my 4 and 5 year old. I love that Courtney's adventure began because she wanted to say, "thank you". What a great message to send during the holidays. I have a feeling this book will be read long after Christmas has come and gone.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love Penguins and I LOVE Courtney!

This is such a sweet book about a little penguin, Courtney, who sets off to thank Santa personally for a Christmas gift. She makes the long journey from the South Pole to the North Pole .... in fact, it takes 364 days! Yes, she gets to the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

With help from Santa, Courtney is able to make a wish that helps save Christmas.

This book has such a great message about being thankful and about helping others.

I loved the illustrations as well.

Emlyn Chand does it again with the latest in her Bird Brain books. As you can see by the title, this one finds the featured bird having to lend a hand to keep children all over the world from being disappointed on Christmas.

Each book focuses on a different breed of bird. Fittingly, Chand uses a Penguin for this installment who decides to travel all the way to the North Pole to thank Santa in person for a gift he gave her. When she arrives, she finds out that Santa is facing a problem that could end up cancelling his yearly ride and jumps into action.

As with the other Bird Brain books, Chand doesn't simplify her word choices. This provides a great opportunity for parents to expand their children's vocabulary while they also learn life lessons. Courtney's year-long journey to thank Santa teaches kids about gratitude and her willingness to help when asked also provides a great example. The illustrations are also colorful and cute, sure to keep a child's attention. If you are looking for a last minute read to close off the holidays, pick this one up.

My Review: 5 Stars

Courtney is one adorable penguin, that is for sure. Both my girls and I loved reading her story. She really sends a good message too - reminding us all that we should say, "Thank You" for the gifts we are given. That is what set her on her journey in the first place, because she wanted to thank Santa. In the end, Courtney gets to be the hero and save the day. It is just a feel good story, through and through.

The illustrations are beautifully done and would enthrall children younger than mine (6). My 1st grader was able to read along just fine and we all enjoyed the story together. Courtney Saves Christmas is a keeper in our house for sure!

Courtney is a very special penguin who goes on a very special adventure! Santa brings her a compass for Christmas, and Courtney uses it to explore. She ends up helping Santa and having an amazing Christmas experience. This book was so cute and such a fun read! The pictures were wonderful. My daughter and I both loved this book. It is a sweet story, and a great example of helping others before yourself. A perfect read for this time of year!

I love Penguins! And I'm sure all kids do as well. Combine it with Christmas, Santa and travel around the world and Emlyn's got a winner story.

Set in the spirit of Christmas, this story has more than one moral and teaches the magic of thanking and helping others.

The lovely pictures make the story more interesting for those little readers. This is a story they would like to be read to every Christmas.

This is a cute little book about a sweet mannered penguin named Courtney. She gets a compass for Christmas from Santa and wants to personally Thank him for the present. Her trip takes a long time but she finally arrives to see Santa to find out that he needs help or Christmas wont happen. Courtney makes a special wish and is then able to help Santa save Christmas. My daughter had a hard time sitting through the book as it is much longer than what she is used to (she is 5) but my son loved the book and he is 6. He did say it was a long book but he enjoyed it. I thought it was a nice Christmas story also and fun that a penguin helped save Christmas. With younger children maybe read it over a few nights

My 5 and 7 year old boys both love to read and be read to. I love when I find stories like this that have such a great message. The characters were so cute and the illustrations were beautiful. Courtney is a sweet little penguin who uses her Christmas gift to go on an adventure and help others. You could read this in one sitting or over a couple nights at bedtime. I give Courtney a 5/5!
