Book Description

October 2, 2001
Julie Parsons exploded onto the literary scene with her debut novel, "Mary, Mary," which, according to "The New York Times," "takes the psychological suspense thriller to places it rarely dares to go." Now, in "The Courtship Gift," a shy female entomologist is pitted against a murderous maniac.

Dublin on a cold April night. Anna Neale arrives home late and discovers her husband, David, dead in his study, his face a rictus mask of agony. Anna gazes with disbelief at the telltale marks on his skin. It seems David died from anaphylactic shock induced by a bee sting. But it is not bee season, and he has known all his life that he is allergic to the bee's poison. Anna finds a peculiar package addressed to David and begins to suspect that he was murdered.

As the weeks pass, Anna learns that nothing in her life with David had been as it seemed. In death, her husband is an utter stranger to her. She is now alone, defenseless, and feels herself falling apart.

This is just what attracts the handsome and sympathetic man who calls himself Matthew Makepiece. Matthew has been watching for months, waiting for his opportunity, orbiting her quiet world in increasingly constricting circles. As she gets to know him, Anna senses danger. Ultimately, she realizes her own life is in jeopardy and has no choice but to do what no one believed her capable of.

Julie Parsons has created another female protagonist of extraordinary strength and psychological resources.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Following her well-received debut (Mary, Mary), Parsons pairs her intelligent style with a heroine to match, throws in a villain with a compellingly creepy courting ritual culled from the insect kingdom and comes up with another winning psychological suspense thriller. When Dublin solicitor David Neale is found dead of anaphylactic shock brought about by a bee sting, his entomologist wife, Anna, can't quite believe it. After all, David knew he was allergic and avoided bees assiduously. Upon discovering a package that was delivered to David on the day of his death, Anna's suspicions are heightened. Soon, however, her idyllic memories of her late husband are spoiled as she learns he was living a secret life rife with lies, corruption and other women. Isolated in her widowhood, Anna falls vulnerable to the charms of handsome Matthew Makepiece, ostensibly a real estate developer but in reality the enigmatic, chilling and masterfully seductive villain who the reader already knows has been watching Anna from the beginning. When he offers her the key, will Anna be bold enough to open the Pandora's box of Matthew's past? Can she cope with the ugly truths that she may find there? Parsons skillfully strikes gothic notes here and there, lending a traditional dimension to the modern tale. The inclusion of scientific metaphors referring to astronomy or the mating rituals of bees is sometimes heavy-handed, yet adds a stimulating twist to an otherwise straightforward plot. Fans of Thomas Harris and James Patterson should be pleased with the ick factor behind the "gift" that Matthew bestows upon women before bedding them. (Mar.)

From Library Journal

Anna Neale is shocked when she finds her husband David, a Dublin solicitor, on his study floor--dead from an allergic reaction to a bee sting. But her entire world crumbles as she discovers that her husband led a double life (involving other women, an illegitimate child, and drug trafficking) and died deeply in debt. In the depths of her despair, Anna finds a "savior" in Matthew Makepiece, a handsome property developer who purchases Anna's home and offers comfort. What Anna doesn't realize is that Matthew is really Michael Mullen, the drug dealer and sadistic murderer who killed Daivd (and others) as a "courtship gift." Will Anna be able to survive her encounter with Michael where others did not? As in Mary, Mary (LJ 1/99), Parsons creates a strong female character thrust into deadly circumstances engineered by a really nasty killer; recommended for fans of Mary Higgins Clark.

3.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful, macabre novel about a sociopath., March 19, 2000
Julie Parson's first book, "Mary, Mary," was outstanding. Her second novel, "The Courtship Gift," is not as good as her first. Parsons has a kinship with Ruth Rendell; she focuses on people who have been abused as children and who then turn their anger outward to harm others later in life. Michael Mullen had a mother who was a drunken prostitute. After her death, he was raised by his grandmother, and he learned that you take what you want out of life, no matter whom you hurt. Michael proceeds to become a big-time drug dealer and when he wants money or a woman, he simply kills whoever gets in his way. The heroine is Anna Neale, whose husband is Michael's latest victim. Her character is a weakness in the book. She is a brilliant entomologist (an expert on insects), but she is unbelievably naive and gullible when it comes to men. Anna has no idea that her husband, David, had a host of unsavory "extracurricular activities" before his untimely demise. Michael effortlessly draws Anna into his spider web, and it takes Anna a long time to realize that Michael is not the nice guy that he appears to be on the surface. Anna's naivete is unbelievable, although it a convenient plot device. Michael is so completely evil that he becomes a caricature. However, Parsons has a way with dialogue and suspense, and the book flows smoothly until its violent end. "The Courtship Gift" is a dark book about some very dysfunctional people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful psychological drama, February 17, 2000
Upon returning home from her job at a Dublin museum, a stunned Anna Neale discovers her spouse David dead from an allergic reaction to a bee sting. Though the police believe an accident occurred, Anna questions how the insect got into their home.

Anna begins to learn the truth about David's other life. He had lovers and even sired a child with another woman. He ran up a large debt that requires her to sell their home. His clients were noted for laundering drug money.

Anna meets Matthew Makepeice, the person who bought her home. He is kind and considerate, and she begins to fall in love with him. They make love together and she becomes pregnant. However, she soon discovers that Matthew is not the compassionate person she thinks he is. As she learns more about her new paramour, she wonders if any male is safe.

THE COURTSHIP GIFT is a chilling well-written psychological drama that readers will immensely enjoy. Anna is a wonderful heroine who has bad luck in her choice of men. David, seen in flashbacks, is an interesting character, but readers will be horrified and fascinated by Matthew. Julie Parsons, author of the acclaimed MARY, MARY, has written a psychological thriller that will receive tremendous acclaim from critics and fans.

Well-plotted, flawlessly executed, well-written. Best mystery I have read in years. Set in Ireland but no cardboard Irish characters. Subtle and rewarding. On a par with her other terrific book, "Mary, Mary". Thanks amazon for recommending this.
