From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6?Lindsay, 11, and her family have recently moved from the country into a small apartment in the heart of Schenectady. The building's courtyard replaces the meadows she's used to, and a sundry assortment of strangers replace old friends. Adler's story is about the girl's adjustment to city life, making new friends, and her relationship with her three-year-old brother. Garth needs extensive facial plastic surgery due to an accident and the family has moved into the city to be closer to hospitals. Lindsay blames herself for his injury and handles him with kid gloves. She is responsible for watching him all summer and he has become a spoiled brat. Her predicament is overshadowed by the needs of a stray cat. The neighbors, who come in all shapes and sizes, rally around Lindsay, offering advice on how to make Garth behave and helping her find a home for the cat. In the end, Lindsay finds that coming to terms with a past error is necessary if she's going to enjoy her new life and believe in herself. An uplifting, honest story with an excellent balance of humor, mystery, and friendship.?Joan Soulliere, Wenham Public Library, MA

Gr. 4^-6. After her family moves from rural upstate New York to New York City, Lindsay has only a small courtyard for a view. Her summer job taking care of three-year-old Garth is another constriction in her life. As she struggles with loneliness and the guilt she feels for Garth's disfiguring accident, Lindsay finds a new set of friends and attitudes, all connected to a Siamese cat living in the courtyard. Adler deals with urban concerns, but the story is really a basic "make new friends" one, and Lindsay's shy movement toward finding friends who aren't duplicates of her old ones is carefully conveyed. Lindsay isn't flashy and verbal. Rather, she's a child who holds things in, and readers who do likewise will easily understand her.
