Book Description

Lainey Murphy is neither the most popular girl at her high school nor the least. And she wants to stay that way, thank you.

Enter Tick Murphy, the cousin with candy-apple-red hair and an equally loud personality. First, she makes a spectacle of herself in Drama class, then she plays an awful prank on Lainey’s friends. This is her “making an effort” to fit in? What’s next? Burning down the school?

Lainey tries everything she can to get along with her cousin, but she’s starting to wonder why. The only thing that will return Lainey’s life to pre-Tick normalcy would be if her annoying cousin left town … back to the west coast, and out of Lainey’s life.

How is Lainey going to make that happen?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and honest August 12, 2012

Cousins Forever is a fun novel that I highly recommended for young adults, and a pleasant light read for discerning adult readers!

As an adult reader who enjoys young adult fiction, I sometimes have trouble believing the characters because authors have the make dubious decisions "because they're young and stupid" thus turning them into caricatures of teenagers. Author Dalya Moon doesn't fall into this trap, though: I feel like her young adults are real people verging on adulthood and I can see the complex motivations that lead them to make mistakes: they're worried about public image, relationships with friends and family, self-identity, etc.

Cousins Forever really showcases Dalya Moon's talent with young characters. Lainey and Tick Murphy fit into archetypes of good kid / bad kid at times, but without becoming flat stereotypes. We get to watch them grow and change as Tick and her mother move in and shake up not only Lainey's life, but that of her friends and family.

PS - I love how the author often ties some current stuff into her stories to situate them in time. I outright laughed with the throwaway mention of bronies in this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Young Teen Read August 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Cousin's Forever is such a sweet book for young adults, grades 7-9th. It is about everyday life in the world of 15 year-olds. It is a coming of age story about real teenage life. Most importantly, this story is about family. The author really shows the reader the importance of family as well as the importance of respecting one another's differences.

The story begins with 15 year-old Lainey's eccentric cousin from California and Aunt decide to move in. Her sister is away at college and suddenly her cousin with candy apple red-hair is sharing a room with her. Lainey doesn't know why her cousin Tick and her Aunt Trudy have left California to come live clear across the country. And Lainey isn't sure her closest friends are even going to like Tick. Tick is the complete opposite of Lainey, she enjoys drama and she likes to get into trouble. How is Lainey going to survive having her cousin at school and in her house? A wonderful story by Dalya Moon that is very current in how teenagers interact with some subtle but important messages for young readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Snowy Cove-Cousins Forever July 25, 2012

This was a interesting book. It is definitely more for a younger crowd, say 7-9th grade. That age should be able to relate to this book. I will refer it to my younger cousins and friend's children. I look forward to other books by Dalya Moon.
