Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Last year the Cousteau Society launched a major expedition to Papua, New Guinea, and its offshore islands as part of a new series, "Rediscovery of the World." The purpose was to explore diverse cultures and an exotic environment, and note ecological problems. The trekok? required two ships ( Calypso and the new windship Alcyone ), two aircraft, Zodiacs, trucks and jeeps to carry the diving, film and scientific teams. Jacques Cousteau's son and Richards, coauthors of Amazon Journey , here give us a day-by-day account of the various teams at work on land and underwater. They visit gold mines and butterfly farms, explore sunken vessels from World War II and fabulous coral reefs; they attend initiation ceremonies and other tribal rites. This is an exciting, instructive re-creation of the journey-adventure, and the photographs are magnificent. BOMC dividend selection; Nature Book Society alternate; author tour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Something of a disappointment., December 23, 2004

This review is from: Cousteau's Papua New Guinea Journey (Hardcover)
It is fair to say that if your father was a successful and famous General then the last thing you should do is join the army. I get the supreme feeling from this book (and from other examples of the work of Jean-Michel Cousteau) that he should have remained an architect.

Of course, "Cousteau" is Jean-Michel's surname - so what other name would you expect him to use I hear you say. But everything about the book - including the title, appears to be presented in such a way as to dupe the potential buyer into believing they are purchasing a work by Jacques Cousteau when they are not. In fact the single word "Cousteau" - as opposed to "Jean Michel Cousteau," is used throughout the book - the Cousteau Pilot did this and the Cousteau Divers did that.

Unlike the many books by his father, there is little in this book to set the reader's imagination alight - which, when one considers the immense resources available to the authors, is something of a disappointment. Admittedly, the book is something of a reasonable appraisal of Papua New Guinea and it does tell us much about this interesting country and it's people. The style of writing, however, is akin to an ordinary travelogue and very few of the photographs catch the imagination

From now on, I will think twice about buying any book just because it has the name "Cousteau" on the cover.

I love Cousteau and family but am only familiar with the videos. Give me something to look at!

Thanks
