I was so excited to get this book. I have always wanted more details on how to make the beautiful couture jackets like Chanel or Yves Saint Laurent. I was expecting significantly more detail than what was provided in the book. It just gives you some finishing touches of the jacket, like how to make button holes and hems. It does go over some sleeve details and how to do a fly front zipper and I did like that. The pictures were great and it is descriptive and helpful on how to do the techniques mentioned, but it just wasn't enough content. I really wanted to know how to put the body of the jacket and make the notched collars and how to make the lapel roll just right. I wanted to learn how to shrink the fabric and manipulate it, what kind of underlinings and what to do with them, details about fashion fabric and pressing for the specific applications in these jackets. None of that was in this book. I won't return it, but I don't think much more is offered here than in her other couture book. I'm rather disappointed in this.

All this book covers is a few buttonholes, pockets and a tailored sleeve. The pictures were good but not as clear as I had hoped. The DVD helps. Claire's book on couture sewing techniques covers most of the subjects in this book in a much better manner. From my perspective this is material from her books fluffed up with pictures and a few details. Disappointing.

Update. I had planned to return this book and DVD but I, lost track of time and wound up keeping it ( the 30 days were up). I must add that this review is written from the perspective of a Claire Scheffer fan. If you are looking at buying this book as a stand alone tailoring reference, it does cover some basics techniques but there are other works that are more comprehensive. I still vastly prefer Claire's other books and feel this one misses the very high expectations that I have come to have for her work. The DVD is worth watching and if you are new to tailoring, you might get good use from it. I wish I could have given five stars and am sorry to report it thus.

I own Shaeffer's "Fabric Sewing Guide 2nd Ed." and "Couture Sewing Techniques: Revised and Updated" and find them to be invaluable references. When I saw "Couture Sewing: Tailoring Techniques," I was hoping to get a COMPLETE volume on designing a jacket from start to finish; this is simply not the case. "Tailoring Techniques" covers the "other parts" of the jacket--buttonholes, pockets, hems and sleeves (as well as trousers)--but not the main body and foundation of the jacket itself; that information is in the "Couture Sewing Techniques: R&U" volume (Chapter 10). If you buy BOTH "Couture Sewing Techniques: R&U" AND "Couture Sewing: Tailoring Techniques," one will have a fairly comprehensive guide to sewing a custom-fitted jacket. It's just too bad that ALL the information isn't contained within ONE volume. In all of Shaeffer's books, the easy-to-follow directions and comprehensive descriptions are concise, thorough, and complete, almost as though she is there in person guiding you through the process. And while her approach is casual and friendly in the DVD included with "Couture Sewing: Tailoring Techniques," the DVD seems somewhat unnecessary because the info in the book IS so complete. The one thing the DVD does have, however, are live samples which the affable Ms. Shaeffer uses as historical reference and to illustrate her techniques. I would suggest to Ms. Shaeffer that if a revised issue of "Couture Sewing Techniques" is released, it should contain all the info provided in "Couture Sewing: Tailoring Techniques" in the "Jackets & Coats" chapter.

good visual presentation of tailoring processes, but certain steps are skipped altogether (amongst others, canvassing!). Good support for those interested in women's couture tailoring, but incomplete

I'll start with the positives first. I love the style of this book. In a post YouTube, Craftsy world, I believe things have shifted in terms of how people like information presented to them. This book does a wonderful job of explaining the techniques in an easily-digestible fashion. The photography is excellent. You need to know how to make a bound buttonhole? This is the book for you.

Here's why I give it only three stars: if I counted correctly, there are only eight techniques covered in the main section of the book (the part with the good photos). There are more in the appendix, but you get illustrations instead of photos. If I were making my first tailored jacket or pants, I'm not sure there's enough in this book to get me through it. For instance, there's nothing about linings.

What I would love is a hybrid of this book and Couture Sewing Techniques, Revised and Updated. This book has depth, but lacks breadth. Couture Sewing Techniques has breadth, but I think it needs more depth via step-by-step pictures. Conversely, Couture Sewing: The Couture Cardigan Jacket, Sewing secrets from a Chanel Collector is perfect, because it has the right amount of depth for a single project. Maybe this book would have been better if it were two books -- one dedicated to jackets and one to pants.
