This story had a lot of voice which helped create a really strong MC. Elise, the MC, also shows a little character development, which was interesting to see unfold a little.

Elise was transparent from the beginning: she had personality and lots of it. It worked well, and stayed consistent in this story. I haven't read much of modern day books with witches, and this didn't totally disappoint in that regard. There is strong language, and some sex (although not much), so if that's a turn off for you, you may not click with Elise's personality.

As far as the paranormal aspect, it involves werewolves, vampires and witches. I'm interested in witchcraft, but not vamps or werewolves. Fortunately, Young doesn't go into a lot of detail regarding the vamps and werewolves, which made it bearable for me. They were there, but they weren't sucking blood like crazy, so I didn't mind them.

Overall, it was an easy read with a strong magic system. If she had anything going for her, Young seemed to really know how the magic worked, and she kept that consistent. It was interesting to read about the spells they'd cast, the way they used their magic, etc. I liked this aspect, and it made me want to keep reading to see how Young would introduce different things.

My biggest issues come from the characters and their relationships. It felt like it went from love triangle, to square, and back to a different triangle. By the end, I still didn't have a good understand of what her relationship with Van was. I clearly understood that they weren't committed, but why was he so annoyingly possessive and protective then? Mona, a sweet little girl, was good in herself, but I didn't really understand her purpose.

While I found this book to be enjoyable, it was a total clusterf_ck. It was all over the place. It seemed as if the writer but too much emphasis on making Elise come across as a bad_ss, but I just read absolutely nothing proving she was tough, strong, or even the determined type. It lacked character depth.

That being said, it did flow well. I kept reading waiting to see what craziness would happen next. It was constant, but overall, little changed. I think you could probably skip this book, jump onto to book 2 and miss out on very little.

When starting this book, I noticed it was book 1 in the series, but I failed to note it was spinoff from another series, so perhaps had I read original series, this would have been a 5 star read for me like it was to so many others. Just for me personally, jumping into this book left much to be desired. I will not be continuing this series, or recommending this to others. But for a freebie, it wasn’t bad.

I have read the Nephilim Warriors series that this book is a spin off from, and although it was lovely being reminded of the characters I already know, I believe this could easily be read without feeling like you have missed out if you haven't read the other series. That said....if you haven't read the Nephilim Warrior Series, you should, not out of necessity, but because the books are awesome! This book is equally as good, and I was so thoroughly into it that when I read the last page I was shocked, talk about a cliff hanger!!! It's a brilliant story about a Witch who has to keep her coven alive, and by doing so, help to save the world from a faction that wants to 'out' the supernatural to the human world, make them all out to be evil, and have them all killed. There is excitement, sadness, romance and action galore in this book and I can't wait for the next one to be released.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review:

I am a huge fan of the Nephilim Warrior series and I so wanted to love this spin off. I don't hate it, but I was not as excited as I wanted to be after I finished it.
I understand that this is the first book in the series, but I felt like there was too much going on and that nothing was resolved. I would have liked to have had closure on at least one thing before three more were added. I know you want to keep readers excited and wanting more but I am not going to remember what all was going on - it was just too much.
I would have also liked a little more story about Elise and Garrett. I found myself wondering more and more about him throughout the book. I am sure there could have been some great back stories. I guess I just felt like he needed a little more love (other than what he got in the tower - WOW-ZER!).
I am looking forward to the next book - hopefully it will give some closure to a few things and expand on Mona as well.

Not enough detail about characters and past events to follow story line well. Seemed to expect reader to know who groups were with names I've never heard before.
Very confusing. Anti climatic and left reader hanging at the end.

This was a great book. I liked the fact that there are several different types of species in this one. As always this author keeps you on your toes.

A great trip into a world that is based in Earth. If you love sorcery then this book is for you! Duty and Destiny are two things Elise struggles with. Nice to see a character so comfortable with her physical body. Elise is a sexual being and makes no apologies for it. She is trying to do the right thing.
This is a off shoot of another saga featuring Annabelle. It's nice to see the development of Elise on her own.
Characters you will root for, great pacing, and action packed to keep you hooked!
I give this book an A
