Book Description

February 1, 2007

The Covenant in Action was developed to continue the inspirational spirit of the Covenant With Black America and to empower people to take effective action to achieve THE Covenant goals.  The information, tools, and ideas presented in The Covenant in Action will enable and inspire people to become agents of change in their respective communities and to become partners in a larger Covenant movement.

The Covenant in Action is organized into three parts: (1) stories about the projects and actions that everyday people have undertaken over the past year that were inspired by the Covenant With Black America; (2) motivational essays from young Black activists who are on the ground impacting their environments; and (3) a toolkit outlining steps you can take to organize, connect, and act.  The toolkit contains not only traditional action strategies, but includes innovative approaches to organizing and community building that will result in stronger, more bonded communities that are reflective of their history and past experiences.  The Covenant With Black America was only the first step.  The Covenant in Action toolkit will prime and prepare individuals and communities to actually move the Covenant book into action.

About the Author

With his late-night television talk show, Tavis Smiley, on PBS, and his radio show The Tavis Smiley Show from NPR, Smiley was the first American ever to simultaneously host signature talk shows on both PBS and National Public Radio. Smiley’s television program is the first show in the history of PBS to be broadcast from the West Coast. The Tavis Smiley Show on public radio is currently distributed by PRI, Public Radio International. He can also be heard weekdays on his nationally syndicated commentary, The Smiley Report. Additionally, Tavis offers political commentary on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show.

Tavis has authored several, inspiring books of personal narratives about love, loss, and faith by African Americans from all walks of life. He’s also the founder of the Tavis Smiley Foundation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Actually READING the Book is Prerequisite for Review, February 15, 2007
This review is from: The Covenant In Action (Paperback)
When other readers of this review notice "Originalman's" disparaging review...do note he acknowledges for the most part never read the book, only postured on how 'his' types of books are better suited for the advancement of African-Americans.

For "Originalman" to claim "ignorance" of the author relating to African-American history, while simultaneously revealing he is ignorant of the contents of the very book in which he offered a "review" is telling at best and immensely troubling at worst and speaks to a multiplicity of issues within both books of the Covenant.

Any person who seeks to KEEP us from reading and forming our own opinions is not enlightened, simply misinformed and ill-equipped to advance the discussion. Please READ the book before offering disparaging reviews. Op/Ed pieces on the misleading nature of "books" are better suited elsewhere.

Don't hate on Tavis Smiley, the man is real. He talks the talk and he is walks the walk. Tavis always puts his money where is his mouth is.....People need to stop critizing and help a brotha out. He always asks that everyone come out and support the causes, to assist in making changes for black america. Make sure you are doing your part before you criticize Mr. Smiley. Because he is "Talking the Talk" and "Walking the Walk". May God continue to bless his efforts.
