Book Description

The year is 993 BC. After years of bloody civil war, Eleazar son of Dodai, one of King David’s most elite warriors, wants nothing more than to finally live peacefully in the land. But on the plains near the Great Sea, a terrifying army of Philistines has mobilized to crush the Hebrew tribes once and for all. In the sun-drenched valleys and dark forests of the hill country, Eleazar and his warriors make their stand against Israel’s deadliest enemy. The fate of an entire nation rests on the courage of a small band of heroes known as the Mighty Men. In a land torn by conflict, depleted by drought and threatened by treachery, the horrors and heroism of the ancient battlefields come to life. This ebook download of Covenant of War is the second book in the Lion of War series—the intense, gritty, and stylistic portrayal of the Mighty Men of Israel, a rag-tag band of warriors who came to King David in his most desperate hour and fought with him while he claimed the throne he was destined to fill. Their legendary deeds are recorded in 2 Samuel 23 and 1 Chronicles 11.

5.0 out of 5 stars Covenant of War is for women too April 14, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
For any woman who thinks perhaps this set of stories might not interest her, I say don't listen to that voice! These books are completely satisfying for those women who wish to experience the Bible with fresh eyes and in vivid detail.

I read the first book in this series, Day of War, in two days and was captured by the story of Benaiah and the Mighty Men. Covenant of War took another two days. I was completely mesmerized and delighted in the effective way that Mr. Graham brought history to life in the telling.

Through the descriptions given and the story line, I SEE these guys--Keth/Uriah with his long braids and robes getting caught up in limbs as he runs toward the enemy; Benaiah, covered with scars from his battle with the lion, and always ready to fight and defend God's people; David's amber eyes and reddish hair and the reality of his struggles as a man who loves God and desires the blessings of God while struggling with his own humanity. And Eleazar--what a mighty warrior! If I were a guy, I'd have been shouting the war cry right along with Eleazar as he went into battle during his last stand. Whoo!It just took my breath away.

I recommend this book to anyone--male or female--as it gives gritty, honest life to the lives of those we read about in the Bible. With help from this series--and I realize that it is a novel and not every aspect of the lives of these men is known to us--we get a glimpse of what life may have been like for men of war in the days of David.

Thank you, Mr. Graham, for this series. I am eager to read book three when it is released.

David is on the run from King Saul, his rag tag army has been helping the Philistines while they bid their time. But now the Philistines are going to make their push to destroy Israel. Eleazar comes to the forefront of history at this point. All he wants is peace, but it doesn't appear that this will happen. War is brewing.

Cliff Graham's writing is absolutely superb. If you have studied your Bible and think you know these characters you are in for a treat. Yes, this is a novel, but the development of the characters is insightful and well researched. Do keep in mind this is one mans view of things, but it is masterfully done and will give you much to think about as you read. Keep your Bible handy and refresh your mind on these stories as you work through the novel.

One disclaimer that the author makes and I would agree with, this period of history was violent and Graham does not hold back. The book has violence and detail. If you are a sensitive reader or want to give this to your kids to read you need to take into account what they will experience. It is true to the history of the region and truth never hurts, but just be aware.

If you love historical Biblical Novels you will love this book and the entire series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! September 2, 2012
This book continues on after the events of the first book of the series, Day of War. With David newly arrived on the throne of Israel, the Philistines have launched an invasion, hoping to crush the kingdom once and for all. With David having neglected the military, and with the army scattered, it will take a miracle to overcome the enemy...and a miracle they might just get.

Ever since I was a kid, I enjoyed the Biblical stories of David and his mighty men, and I was glad to see Day of War come out. Covenant of War is just as good, and makes for some exciting reading. Like the other, it keeps close to the Biblical story, and yet fleshed it out and makes it a full and very interesting story. I think that the author did a great job of bringing ancient Israel to life, and populating it with great warriors who are yet real flesh-and-blood men.

I enjoyed the first book of the series, and I enjoyed the second one. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, honest tale May 30, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
I would have liked to know that I couldn't get the rest of the series until later. I would have read slower. The story was riveting, the details gritty enough to feel like I was there with the warriors. It was graphic, but no more than a sleazy romance novel would be and less than a Tarantino movie. Graham does a great job pulling the readers emotions into the story (an ability that is rare these days) and that makes the story come alive. After reading the first two books and the two short stories I started in on 1 Samuel and geography in the books really helped make 1 & 2 Samuel come alive.

4.0 out of 5 stars King David and his mighty warriors come to life! May 16, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
"Once during the harvest, when David was at the cave of Adullam, the Philistine army was camped in the valley of Rephaim. The Three (who were among the Thirty--an elite group among David's fighting men) went down to meet him there. David was staying in the stronghold at the time, and a Philistine detachment had occupied the town of Bethlehem.

David remarked longingly to his men, "Oh, how I would love some of that good water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem." So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew some water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord. "The Lord forbid that I should drink this!" he exclaimed. "This water is as precious as the blood of these men who risked their lives to bring it to me." So David did not drink it. These are examples of the exploits of the Three." 2 Samuel 23:13-17

No matter what your view of the Bible, one cannot help but be amazed at the names and exploits of Biblical characters such as The Thirty and The Three who were part King David's army during a time when the ancient Hebrews were fighting both one another and their mortal enemies, the Philistines. Such interesting and historical stories in the Old Testament books, such as 2 Samuel, add a flavor to Biblical history that leaves some wanting more and some wanting less.

The theological issues raised as one reads through such books have been the source of controversy for many years and decades if not centuries. "If God is love, then why did they kill in the name of God like they did?" "How can such things be done in God's name?
