5.0 out of 5 stars When is the next one coming out?!?
I believe that this may be the first book that has left me sitting on the edge of my seat agog with suspense by tying up subplots. Indeed, the awful thought crossed my mind - what if Gardener tied these up as an end to the series? No, I reassure myself, the tying up isn't entirely tidy, there is still a major subplot left open, and new subplots to come...

3.0 out of 5 stars Must be mediocre if it doesn't ring a bell.
I read a lot of mysteries and other books, but it's no excuse when a title calls up no thoughts, On the other hand I usually remember a really bad book; thus the 3 rating.

I believe that this may be the first book that has left me sitting on the edge of my seat agog with suspense by tying up subplots. Indeed, the awful thought crossed my mind - what if Gardener tied these up as an end to the series? No, I reassure myself, the tying up isn't entirely tidy, there is still a major subplot left open, and new subplots to come.

This is another superbly told and involving mystery. I have been extremely impressed with Ashley Gardner's writing. Her characters are complex and I am always happy to be with them again. One can sympathize with them in their cross-purposes, even as they pain one another. Lacey continues where the last book left off, seeking to dissolve his marriage with the long-estranged wife who deserted him, hoping to find his daughter, and courting his new love. In this volume, it appears that someone is preying on the "game girls", not something terribly important to officialdom, but worrying to those, like Lacey, who have a strong sense of justice. When his daughter disappears, most of the characters are forced into re-evaluating their relationships in the course of a frantic search.

The drawing together of several loosely inter-related subplots appears to be the precursor of allowing major changes in Lacey's life. I presume that Lacey will continue as a crusader for justice, but his personal circumstances are changing radically, and I think it is very brave of Gardner. It is extremely rare for the situation of a character in a series to alter as much as it seems Lacey's will, but the preceding volumes give me great faith that the series will continue to be excellent. This is what has me on tenterhooks - where does the story go now? How will Lacey deal with this new situations? At this point, I am so caught up with the characters, I wouldn't even care if there was a mystery in the next book, so long as I can continue to follow their lives.

An excellent addition to a superior series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best yet, November 2, 2006

This review is from: A Covent Garden Mystery (Mystery of Regency England) (Mass Market Paperback)
Ashley Gardner has produced a five book series featuring Capt. Gabriel Lacey that is extraordinary in its scope and quality. Some of the books are out of print and not easy to find, but worth the trouble to read in sequence. They are: A Regimental Murder - The Glass House - Sudbury School Murders - A Body in Berkley Square and finally A Covent Garden Mystery.

The skill of the writer is in the characterizations! She gathers a small community of diverse "friends" and provides in-depth knowledge of each. Moreso, she keeps the same group throughout the five books, allowing you to get a better glimpse of who and what they are. The protagonist, Lacey, is complex, wounded, and given to quick temper, while never, ever losing his sense of right and honor. As you read through the experiences of murder and mayhem in each book, the characters become not only more familiar, but more endearing. Even those who are not quite so lovable.

The genre is fascinating (late 1800's London, England) and gives the reader a detailed insight into the day-to-day survival of the masses and simultaneously, the culture of the extreme rich. Gardner's ability to put the reader there, riding the hackneys, walking the filth-strewn streets, enjoying a performance from the luxury box or simply partaking of a scrumpious meal is paramount. Her writing ability abounds. Her characters are memorable, leaving the reader wanting more. But most of all, her book(s) give a lasting impression, one in which you find yourself remembering during quiet moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this series!, May 6, 2007
This review is from: A Covent Garden Mystery (Mystery of Regency England) (Mass Market Paperback)
First Sentence: "The young woman buying peaches in Covent Garden has honey brown hair, clear white skin, deep brown eyes, and a faint French accent."

Captain Gabriel Lacey is finally reunited with the daughter his wife took from him 13 years ago. But just as he finds her, she disappears, as have two "game girls." Lacey pulls out all the stops and, with the help and support of his lover, Lady Breckenridge, friends and colleagues, is determined to find the missing girls.

Gardner has created a thoroughly engaging set of characters, set them in a time of elegance and poverty and provide a suspenseful mystery to tie it all together. The characters may all be a bit too nice, but the book is such a pleasure to read, I didn't care. Lacey is the most developed and complex of the characters. He is a former soldier, quick to anger but with a strong moral core. You feel his elation at finding his daughter, his fear she might have been killed and his pain when he realizes another man has been a father in her life. The story is primarily character driven with many of the characters having come to a resolution of the past and being ready to move on to the future. The sense of place is so well done you become part of the environment. For those who love well done Historical/Regency-period mysteries, I recommend you start at the beginning and thoroughly enjoy this very well done series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read all six in this series if you can!, May 26, 2011

This review is from: A Covent Garden Mystery (Mystery of Regency England) (Mass Market Paperback)
Book number six in the Captain Lacey series set in the Regency time period in England was quite a satisfying historical mystery. I have enjoyed all of the previous books in this series, even though some rated higher than others with me. I sincerely like Captain Gabriel Lacey and have watched him change from a lonely, embittered man to someone who has finally found a chance for happiness over the course of the books. This one was originally published in 2006, but I see that each of the novels will be re-released in 2011 as a lead-up to the brand new seventh novel in September 2011. I am so very glad to see that author Ashley Gardner has not abandoned Lacey and his friends, but will give loyal readers at least one more story.

All the stories in this series build rather heavily upon what happened in the previous book(s), so it is a little difficult to write any type of plot summary which will not give away information important in other novels. I'll simply say that this novel concerns itself with Captain Lacey's efforts to find young women who have disappeared off the London streets in the Covent Garden area. Two of these women are "game girls", better known as prostitutes. Lacey lives in close proximity to Covent Garden so he has at least a passing knowledge of these girls and a great sympathy for their plight. His investigation begins when he is asked to find one of the missing girls. As with all the previous novels this author has made Regency London come alive for me. Her talent for description is superb and the cast of characters she assembled here was first rate. I will say though that this particular novel centered very heavily on Lacey's personal life so the mystery aspect is not as involved as most of the other novels. The novels in order of release are:

#1 - The Hanover Square Affair
#2 - A regimental Murder
#3 - The Glass House
#4 - The Sudbury School Murders
#5 - A Body in Berkeley Square
#6 - A Covent Garden Mystery

I was really afraid this would be the final adventure for Captain Lacey. All of the lose ends of his personal life are concluded very satisfactorily in this book (that's why you should not begin the series with this novel) and quite a long period of time has elapsed since the publication of this book. I was delighted to look on the website for these books to see that a seventh novel will be released this year. The previous books are now being released on Kindle, in print, and there will be a new novella (The Necklace Affair) out in June. I'm really looking forward to the new novel and the novella. Captain Lacey and his entire group of friends, family, and acquaintances are too interesting to be allowed to just fade away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Will There Be More?, September 27, 2009

This review is from: A Covent Garden Mystery (Mystery of Regency England) (Mass Market Paperback)

Once again I enjoyed returning to these characters and reading about the new developments in their lives.

I have enjoyed this series and the characters Ashley Gardner created very much.
I love the period detail and the relationships between the characters.

This is the sixth book in the series. Here they are in order;
The Hanover Square Affair
A Regimental Murder
The Glass House
The Sudbury School Murders
A Body in Berkeley Square
A Covent Garden Mystery

I'm disappointed that the series at least for now seems to have come to an end.
I recommend these books to fans of Historical Fiction and Mysteries.

I'm wondering if Ashley Gardner will write more books for this series?
If you know and you are reading this could you share your information with a comment. And if you have read these books and found something similar you'd like to recommend that would be appreciated as well.
Thanks very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars English Mystery, December 18, 2008
This review is from: A Covent Garden Mystery (Mystery of Regency England) (Mass Market Paperback)
In England-1817- women have been missing in Covent Garden, and Captain Gabriel Lacey has been asked to look into the case. But this is not the only case he has had. This is the 6th book in the series. When Lacey starts investigating, his estranged wife has come back to England looking to end their marriage. She comes back with their daughter Gabriella that he hasn't seen for 16 years. Interesting things start to happen in Covent Garden. But Lacey uncovers secrets about his wife's life, his life, and what it takes to stop the killer.

If you like mystery, suspense, and some history mixed all together in a book, then you will enjoy A Covent Garden. This book kept me wanting to read more. Ashley Gardner, the author, did a good job of describing Covent Garden and all of the characters. You will understand the book very easily because of all the details she gives the reader. I hadn't read any of the previous books that were written before A Covent Garden, but it still made sense and I would like to read the others. I would recommend this book to ANYONE that likes mystery and suspense. Even if you don't, I would read it to say you read a good mystery book.

5.0 out of 5 stars 6th entry in series is another fantastic read, July 16, 2008
This review is from: A Covent Garden Mystery (Mystery of Regency England) (Mass Market Paperback)
A Covent Garden Mystery by Ashley Gardner is the sixth book (and possibly last) book in the Captain Lacey series. We've seen Lacey mature amazingly since book one when he was a friendless, alcoholic fighting physical pain and personal demons. Now Lacey has just met his daughter Gabriella after a separation of over fifteen years, but she quickly disappears, and Lacey suspects that it may have something to do with the disappearances of two prostitutes from Covent Garden. He marshalls all of the resources he's acquired in the previous several books from Grenville's friends in society, Marianne's in the demimonde, and Denis' in the lowest classes of the city. They all join together to rescue one innocent girl, and two not so innocent, hopefully before it's too late. Gardner's books are vibrant with Regency detail, and because Lacey moves through all levels of society, the reader gets to experience them as well. If this does end up being the final book in the series, Gardner has provided closure for several story lines, but I hope she's able to find a publisher for more titles in this series; there is so many more stories to be told!
