The GoodIf you're not familiar with the group, Black Light Burns is the latest outfit lead by former Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borlan. The group follows up their debut album with this covers album. Faded screams and driving guitar tones dominate "Forkboy." "So Alive" has been given a complete make over. The tempo is sped up and the vocals are more electronic than seductive. "Hungry Like the Wolf" captures a bit of it's original sound in the chorus, but the verse sections take on a life of their own. Subtle but meaty riffs lead the charge on "Lucretia My Reflection." This is also the best vocal performance. "The Art of Self-Defense" is strictly a guitar show. "Blood Red Head on Fire" focuses on intense vocals. Although the album is a strict covers affair, the last bach of songs are Black Light Burns instrumentals. The Bad The song list is a bit obscure. I don't see the point of throwing in the short instrumentals at the end. The Verdict If you know the songs on the album, then you're sure to enjoy it. I'm willing to bet that you haven't really heard them though. The concept of covering not-so popular songs is good in theory, but most people like to compare to how the original was. The songs that work best are the ones that actually have a vocal melody. The ones that don't are just screams and effects. Unfortunately, there are more of those to choose from. Wes Borlan has always been a bit avant-garde and his work with Black Light Burns is no different.

I bought the first album and it was great. I bought this one without reading anything about it. Well that was a mistake. This album is nothing but covers and olny three tracks are worth listening to. The album doesn't have the same tone as the first maybe because of the cover songs this pseudo-supergroup needs to stick to making their own predictable but unique blend of music found on the first album.
