4.0 out of 5 stars 'Covered In Black'-Various Artists(Cleopatra)AC/DC Tribute
I've always thought this release was maybe one of THE best tribute CD's I've ever heard.I've seen the AC/DC touring tribute band known as Hells Bells and THAT made me realize that Angus and the gang isn't the most difficult band on the globe to copy.No matter. If you're a true AC/DC fan,you should at least get something out of 'Covered In Black'.Out of the fourteen...

3.0 out of 5 stars Industrial Tribute to Ang & Mal and the boys is interesting
Well, I see that a lot of people didn't like this compilation. I can understand why; it's not an album full of bands trying to replicate the originals EXACTLY. Most people can't handle something different. Which this CD is, if you're expecting AC/DC. It's not AC/DC. It's mostly industrial/electronic interpretations of AC/DC's songs. I was glad to see...

5.0 out of 5 stars Guess I'm the only one, but I loved it., December 18, 1999
This review is from: Covered in Black Ac/Dc Tribute (Audio CD)
This is the first Cleopatra tribute album I ever heard, and it sent me on a long, strange road into industrial music that I have yet to return from. Some of the greats on this: Highway to Hell, now an EHC standard. Hell's Bells, as only Razed in Black could pull it off. And TNT--dare I say it? I actually prefer the Sister Machine Gun version to the original (please don't hurt me, sir. I'm sorry I disagreed with you.) 16 Volt's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap also feels quite creative, doing a good job of reinventing the song... Most of the other tracks on this album also sound quite pleasing, and although I admit I haven't listened to it in a while, I must say I can't recall a single track on the album that I didn't like.

I was glad to see "Badlands" show up here...the _Flick of the Switch_ album doesn't get enough attention elsewhere. Highlights on here: Godflesh's take on "For Those About to Rock" is just SO dark and, the version of "Squealer" with the female vocalist is cool, the version of "TNT" is downright hilarious. "Whole Lotta Rosie" is pretty cool, too. Lowlights: "Back in Black". The boring reggae repetition of the phrase "back in black" for what seems like an eternity is a track I am forced to skip every time I spin this disc. Overall, I give points to everybody who dared do something different and interesting, but for the most part, this album is "just OK". It's interesting, and fun, and mostly pretty good, but nothing special that'll have you spinning it over and over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Covered in Black Ac/Dc Tribute (Audio CD)
Although I am a relative purist, I thought these covers were different and abstract enough to merit some applause. Aside from a couple annoying numbers (the grating Back In Black), or for instance Whole Lotta Rosie which tried to hard to sound like the original and since no one can come close AC/DC's original, it is a miserable failure. Some really interesting choices though, like The Furor makes for a great industrial number, as does Squealer. I was most pleasently surprised.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is EXCELLENT, November 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Covered in Black Ac/Dc Tribute (Audio CD)
I bought this album because I am a big fan of Godflesh, and my obvious favorite in this album is the dark cover it provided to "For Those About To Rock". If you have not listened to any Godflesh album yet, I would seriously give a listen over Youtube (personal recommendations: "Frail", "Us and Them", "Bittersweet", "Control Freak"). The Godflesh style of industrial music actually had influences over bands like Metallica and Korn.

I also liked the covers for "Highway to Hell", "Squealer", "It's a Long Way to the Top", "Shot Down in Flames", "Hells Bells", "Badlands", and "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap". I am a bit disappointed that a more prolific industrial band such as KMFDM hasn't been involved with this album.

This is a different sort of compilation that may or may not please classic AC/DC fans. Don't get me wrong, I do like AC/DC but I wouldn't go as far as spitting on this album just because it has a different approach. It has quite a good variety of different styles ranging from electronic riffs, high-pitched keyboard wails, distorted grumblings of electric guitars, repeated basses with distorted vocals, heavy metal style vocals and the overall dark atmosphere many of the songs show. If you are not someone who likes industrial music a whole lot, then I guarantee there will be AT LEAST ONE song on this album you liked.

3.0 out of 5 stars One Good Thing On This Disc, May 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Covered in Black Ac/Dc Tribute (Audio CD)
All 3 stars go to one song. Yes, most of the criticism of this release is justified. However, one thing on "Covered In Black" is worth listening to: the cover of "Who Made Who". It's very different than the original, but I respect them for taking chances and retaining the basic groove behind a wall of beats and sounds. It's definitely different, and that is what a tribute album should contain--who wants to hear a band try to copy AC/DC? It's worth a listen......

4.0 out of 5 stars Diverse and avant garde Blare Fest befitting Angus &the Lads, January 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Covered in Black Ac/Dc Tribute (Audio CD)
I've been a stauch AC/DC fanatic ever since 1978 when I heard a song called "TNT" emanating dangerously through the plastic speaker covers of my mother's Ford Pinto. Two months later I witnessed AC/DC steal the show as a mere opening act in front of 60,000 people at one of Bill Graham's historic Oakland Coliseum "Day(s) on the Green." It was an ominous moment in the history of the Twentieth Century, but it has also proven to be a curse, as any concert band other than AC/DC just seems pallid and anti-climactic. Angus Young is a biologic marvel who has some apparent evolutionary edge which allows him to rock-out ferociously and elegantly, and the balance of the band has always provided appropriate context for his raging, sweaty coniptions. So, of course, any band which dares "cover" an AC/DC song better not commit sacrilege by indulging in mediocrity. This compilation does a pretty good job with different interpretations by different bands, most of which are unfamiliar to me, of classic AC/DC cuts. The version of "Whole Lotta Rosie" is scalding. The only severe disappointment is "Hells Bells" which really sounds like some kind of sick, nightmarish experiment, and it is for this blemish that I ding the compilation a star. Bottom Line: If you like AC/DC and are open to alternative genres of metal, you will almost certainly enjoy the combination of the two in this CD. Obviously, it will take some courage on your part to play it at the appropriate volume and to endure the ensuing complaints from neighbors and visits from your local law enforcement authorities.

I feel this cd should be in the reduced section. It is not ac/dc and these bands need to find a job at mc donalds.they cant hold a candle to the real ac/dc.

This is the biggest load of crap I've ever seen. Every single one of these songs is the equivelant of walking to Bon Scott's grave and urinating directly on it. Calling it a tribute is just bringing down one of the greatest bands to ever live further.
