About the Author
Miriam Wood was born, raised and educated in Columbus, Ohio, where since the early 1950s she has made a dedicated study of Ohio's covered bridges. After completing her degree in History from Capital University, she combined her bridging activities with family life and raised four children. In 1960, Miriam became a charter member of the Ohio Historic Bridge Association (formerly the Southern Ohio Covered Bridge Association). She has served this organization as President and Historian, and is currently the Corresponding Secretary and Editor of Bridges and Byways, the OHBA publication. In the 1970s, Miriam prepared National Register information forms for the Ohio Historical Society for over 50 covered bridges. In 1989, in recognition of her many contributions to the preservation of covered bridges, Miriam Wood was awarded the Public Education and Awareness Award by the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office. In addition to the above, Miriam Wood served for over 20 years as Secretary to the Ohio Covered Bridge Committee of the Ohio Historical Society. In 1989 and 1990, Miriam served as a consultant to the Ohio Department of Transportation on the preparation of The Second Ohio Historic Bridge Inventory, Evaluation and Preservation Plan. Miriam and her husband Dick continue to base their studies of covered bridges from their home in Columbus.
