Editorial Reviews

2012 release, a covers album from the Grammy-winning R&B and Soul singer/songwriter. Her brilliant interpretations of songs from Metallica, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and many others shine a light on her unique artistry and passion. Also includes her haunting take on Eurythmics' 'Here Comes The Rain Again'.

5.0 out of 5 stars aMACYing!!!! March 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Not only is this a great covers cd, it's a great cd PERIOD! Macy really outdoes herself on this one. She shows pure artistry in recrafting these songs. Like many of her other recordings, this one definitely deserves recognition come Grammy time! Macy deserves so much more respect and support than she gets! BUY THIS CD!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! May 11, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This CD is amazing! I was skeptical at first because it was a cover cd, but was completely surprised! She truly does give each song new life and makes them her own! The songs are all showing the darker side of Macy, but the skits keep the album in check and show off her playful side. Finally we know the real Macy Gray!

5.0 out of 5 stars Purchased it for her VOICE; Love it for her HUMOR! ;-)~ September 9, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I didn't realize at first that the album was a bunch of parodies. Yeah, I should have guessed by the title 'Covered'. After hearing a snip-it of 'Here Comes the Rain Again' I knew I had to have the whole album. I didn't know much about THE AMAZING, THE GORGEOUS, THE GIGANTICALLY GENIOUS GENIOUSLY GIFTED, HOT SWAG, MACY THE GREAT before this album, but this is one funny lady! Are you boys down in the Castro following this DIVA? If not, fork over your $5 and give this lady some recognition. You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars CAN A COVER ALBUM BE MORE GOOD THAN BAD? June 4, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Covers are probably tricky territory for any artist/musician... Macy Gray pretty much killed it on this cover album making each song her own while not distorting them into something completely unrecognizable. This was extremely well done and shows how well rounded of an artist she is. Her tastes are quite good as the original songs are from a multitude of genres. $5 well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grammy Worthy! May 16, 2012
By Boi
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I bought Macy Gray's first two CD's when they were first released and casually followed her over the years and thought of her as more of a great live act, personality and musician, but forgot how great she is as a worthy recording artist, who's voice is still refreshing and relevant.

"Covered," in my opinion, is the return of Macy Gray the serious recording artist and musician. Listening to this CD, you wouldn't think that you're listening to covers, because she made each track her own, with top notch musicians backing her up. "Creep," "Nothing Else Matters," "Maps," and "Bubbly," are stand-outs and if these songs weren't recorded and made famous by the original artists, they could easily pass as Macy Gray's own original classic timeless pieces. Her interpretation and dedication to each of these songs is evident in her emotional and authentic delivery.

But, what makes this CD even more outstanding and Grammy worthy, is the overall production and packaging. Macy Gray included lots of comedy on this CD--highlighting what most people love about her--Macy's comical genius side. The little skits in between songs, add to the Macy Gray Experience. The decision to include, "Smoke Two Joints," really put the icing on the cake as far as comedy. It seems like a personal declaration Macy was making, that most would believe. I'm no fan of narcotic use or glorification of any kind, but I have a good sense of humor and I think Macy's take on the song is funny and genius given her persona.

Overall, this is one of the best put together CDs, I've listened to in sometime and am rooting for Macy to win another Grammy for it and get the due respect and recognition she deserves.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ugh. A big Macy fan disappointed April 8, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I love Macy's work and have all her albums. I wish I didn't have this one, though. (And I paid $10 for it [ouch!]...I saw that some reviewers paid $5.) It's like Macy has given up, or that she slept through the album. I agree with the reviewer who said all the songs sound similar...and sadly, they're all dull. Even Idris Elba, who is normally fantastic, sounds underwhelmed and sleepy, like someone woke him right before the taping. And all the talky snippets between songs strike me as self-indulgent filler. Macy, please come back to being your irrepressible, irreplaceable self on your next work...please!

Sleepily laying on my couch one nite drifting off to Letterman when on comes Macy Gray, she sings "Here Comes the Rain Again," made famous by 1980's tech pop diva, Annie Lenox...Macy completely made it her own, I sat up-awake now. Letterman who can be a prickly critical dude (recalled when Annie sang it decades ago on his show and he ridiculed her and back up singers because they were guys in drag). She sang beautifully too but he obviously was a homophobe. Back to Macy, her version was so minimalistic singing at the Mic in such a soulful, sad way, you just felt her suffering and feeling the song and I felt it too and said, WOW!!! I got off the couch, ran to a pad and wrote out this title. Bought that wknd and played it to death, then I misplaced it for almost a year - ticked off and not wanting to buy it again..months ago, in my basement, I located it finally, yeah! I play it weekly especially when the rain comes and youre just feeling it...she does a bunch of hits here from the past and makes them hers. there's one song that ridicules the music industry that is great and how she needs to chg her persona and deliverance of songs. (Im sure it was a true exp for her too). Buy this and enjoy, so many great tracks in only Macy's style. Worth the $, cheaper too if digital album is downloaded. Im a CD fan still and older but am converting. :)
