4.0 out of 5 stars COVERS 2 is a winner, March 14, 2006

As with most of Regine's albums, COVERS 2 continues to prove why she's known as Songbird in her native Philippines. There are enough vocal treats within this disc to satisfy anyone who's a fan of good vocals. But, this disc is not just stellar vocals alone, as there are many moments of real creative inventiveness too.

The notable tracks for me begin with "Straight Up," which is not done as the dance tune originally by Paula Abdul, but a jazz-like take on it, that concentrates on the lyrics (realizing unrequited love and no longer willing to be played for a fool), and would fit nicely in any small jazz club setting.

Another winning track is Regine's soft and heartfelt "Head Over Feet." Her voice imbues such longing -- quite different from Alanis Morissette's original.

A track I was afraid of when I read the track listing was "On the Radio." I was afraid Regine would give us Donna Summer-ish disco karaoke. I should have known better. She starts as a ballad they way the original did, and keeps it at a slow burn tempo throughout. An amazing addition to Donna's original.

Though there are a multitude of tracks worth note, the most surprising ones were "Kiss" and "Blue Suede Shoes." Regine's take on Prince's "Kiss" is nothing short of steamy. But, the major winner of this album is "Blue Suede Shoes" -- who knew that this song could have such a sultry blues treatment. As many people have said on hearing this track, 'That girl can sAng!'

There are a couple tracks that fall short of the balance of the album. One is "Still in Love," which is almost boring and easily forgotten. Another is "Silly Love Song," which is decent, but doesn't seem up to the calabre of the rest of this album.

All in all, this is another magnificent acheivement for Songbird Regine -- she absolutely deserves international recognition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Covers 2 Review by Knottydon, February 14, 2006

"Covers 2" simply presents the versatility of the Songbird. She's been around for more than 20 years and this is one of the reasons why her fans love her. She delivers and she rocks in her latest album.

The album cover is done in black & white. She's also sporting shorter and wet look hair (a la Kate Beckinsale)in "Underworld". The CD sticker is a far better than the first one. Unlike the first one, there are no hidden songs nor videos in this album.

"Call Me", the first track, demands a powerful voice and Regine nailed it. Blondie would have been proud of her version. There's one note that she held and it was great.

"Head Over Feet" is slower compared to Alanis' acoustic version. But a Regine touch was added. Cacai provided the backup vocals.

"Let's Stay Together". Not too many female artists have revived this Al Green original. Tina Turner had a version but I haven't heard that one yet. Nice to hear a sweeter version this time.

"Come Together" is a salute to the Beatles. I know that Regine loves this band. In almost all of her concerts, she includes a Beatles song in her repertoire.

"Never Give Up" is frightingly close to the original. If you close your eyes, you would think it's Amy Holland singing.

"Kiss On My List" was just otay in this Hall & Oates original.

"Silly Love Song". The intro reminds me a lot of "Standing Right Next to Me". The first line sounded like "My Heart Belongs to Me". Interesting.

"Straight Up" has a jazzy feel to it. Not sure if Paula Abdul would like this different version tough. Teehee.

"Hold Me In Your Arms", the carrier single. Unfortunately, the MTV is not included in the CD =o( Not too many people know that the original is an Australian band, Southern Sons. I like the piano accompaniment. Easy listening. Nice to hear when you're about to sleep or just awoke.

"Xanadu". Who would have thought that Regine would include this Olivia Newton-John 80's hit in her album? Sumpthin to listen to while taking a shower or driving.

"Take a Chance". In her Retro album, Regine has given us upbeat songs like "Shake Your Groove Thing" and "Hot Stuff". This track is a good follow-up on those tunes. Shake your booty!

"Still in Love". No idea who first sang this song. Not familiar with it. Reg should've included "Piano in the Dark" or "I Can't Make You Love Me" instead of this.

"Blue Suede Shoes" reminds me of Jessica Simpson strutting her stuff in her music video of "These Boots are Made for Walking". A lot of harmonica playing in the background. Lots of vocal calisthenics towards the end. Kudos to Raul Mitra for this arrangement.

"So Much in Love" is an instant favorite. Sheena Easton and Regine's voices are quite similar. Done in R&B style, here we could listen to a more funky & groovy Regine, sumpthin she has started in her Drawn album. Congratulations to Jay Durias of South Border for a wonderful arrangement.

"On the Radio" is a complete turnaround from Donna Summer's version. I like the first 2 minoots of the song.

"Kiss" is again my favorite. I've missed her collaboration with Gerard Salonga. I'm elated that the last track is a good ending for the whole album. This will remind you of only one thing--cabaret.
