Fawcett Juniper September 23, 1992
"Quick and fun with a satisfying resolution."
VOYA
All Brad remembers about that party was that his friend Alden Whitlock drove him home. He also has the nagging feeling that while he was sleeping in the passenger seat, Alden hit something--or someone. Alden and his father, a powerful judge, deny that anything took place. Brad isn't so sure--especially when beautiful Ellen Hanson comes searching in town for her lost father. Suddenly Brad is forced to examine his cushioned world of privilege and to choose between the truth and deceit. Either way, Brad could lose....

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-- Brad awakens with a fierce hangover after attending a drinking party with his best friend, Alden. His clouded memory tells him that something terrible has happened. Although Alden denies any wrongful occurrence, Brad begins to search for evidence that leads him toward a possible car accident and a missing man. He meets Ellen, who is searching for her missing father, and, voila, they discover that they are both on the same trail. It soon becomes clear that this trail leads to a coverup initiated by Alden's father, a less than scrupulous but very powerful judge. Despite the typically dark and oppressive mood, Ellen and Brad manage to find a little romance. Bennett, the master of short sentences, has suspensfully plotted another mystery that is sure to appeal to reluctant readers. This offering is all too easily resolved, however, and is not as satisfying as Skeleton Man (1986) and Dark Corridor (1988, both Watts) . All in all, it's an easy-to-read page turner.

From Kirkus Reviews

When Alden Whitlock, drunken son of a prominent local figure, kills a homeless man, the hit-and-run accident is quickly hushed up. Brad, who had been a semi-comatose passenger in the car, wakes up next morning with vague, disturbing memories--but Alden, Judge Whitlock, and all his friends earnestly assure him that nothing happened. Bennett's plot is painfully contrived--Brad returns to what he thinks is the scene of the crime and finds it swept clean except for a bloodstained pocket-watch with the engraved initials ``P.M.H.''; shortly thereafter, a young woman named Ellen Hanson arrives from out of town with solid evidence that her homeless father Paul had been in the area. Romance blooms as she forces Brad to come clean, but she leaves in disgust when no one else will talk. Amid much talk of responsibility and perspective, Brad confronts Alden and his father; but it's Alden's mother who finally blows the whistle out of concern for her son's conscience. Bennett's use of repetition, inch-long sentences and monosyllabic dialogue make his writing accessible for reluctant readers; still, compared to Strasser's The Accident (1988), both plot and themes here seem raw and undeveloped. 4.0 out of 5 stars How Drunk Driving can lead to a lot of trouble!, December 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Coverup (Fawcett Juniper) (Mass Market Paperback)
A Review by Bree
Alden Whitlock and Brad accidentally hit a homeless man while driving drunk on their way home. Brad returns to the crime scene the next day to find a blood stained watch with the initials P.H.S. engraved on the back. Ellen Hansen came into town to visit her father. When Brad and Ellen meet its love at first site. Brad is now challenged to tell the truth to Ellen knowing she might leave him. He could also hide it from her knowing things might or might not work out. Either choice could result to loss and grieving for both of them.

I enjoy reading mystery books of any sort. "Coverup" appealed and related to me in a way I least expected. Drinking and driving is a common problem with many teenagers. It shows how fast a simple situation can change from fun to drastically serious! "Coverup" is a real page-turner! From the beginning it starts our so incredibly descriptive that you are begging for more time to read! "He awoke in a cold sweat, pale and trembling, his eyes wildly trying to pierce the black night."

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that doesn't enjoy reading. It is a fairly short book that races by page after page. After completing the book I looked back on it asking myself if I actually read that book. "Coverup" gets you hooked on reading. The vocabulary can easily be understood too. Bennett's writing is clear and precise. I enjoyed this book and so will you!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Story of Friendship, April 17, 2006
This review is from: Coverup (Fawcett Juniper) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book, Coverup by Jay Bennett, is a book for the teen-aged group because it was about several teens, and the problems that they faced when drinking took hold of their lives. It was not a terribly challenging book, yet it had some intense moments of peril in it. When Brad and his life-long friend, Alden, get into some trouble after a big party, Brad can't distinguish what was real and what was not. He does remember a crash though, and lots of blood. He knows he was drinking, and dancing, and laughing, but he doesn't remember much of the ride home, except for the crash, a deserted road, and being left there, alone. When he is forced to squeeze the story out of Alden, emotions run haywire, and their friendship is tested. After several calls from a mysterious source and a new girl in town, Brad starts to find more and more clues that lead him down roads he never wanted to go. He starts to question himself, his parents, and his best friend. Through a turn of events Brad finally cracks the mystery, but his conclusions are more shocking than he thought! This book is filled with mystery, friendship, and some modern day problems. This book was a fantastic read, and remains one of my favorites several years after first reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drunk driving leads to trouble for two teens., April 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Coverup (Fawcett Juniper) (Mass Market Paperback)
The consequences of teen drinking and driving are explored in this quick, excellent read. While driving home from a party with his friend Alden behind the wheel, Brad, the main character and narrator, knows something happened but isn't quite sure what. Brad works to fill in gaps in his memory that were created by drunkeness. Themes of stifiling the truth and uncovering the real people hiding behind the masks they wear are strong themes in this fast-paced novel.
