Does It Get Better Than This?,
By Icedeer (Colorado United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cow Hear This (Audio CD)
"Cow Hear This!" is a compilation of "real" country music from the roadhouses, clubs, and bars of Texas by indie producers Cowpendia. If your idea of country music revolves around Shania Twain and Faith Hill, leave this cd alone. If you like music that is smart, funny, coherent, and contagious - this is your cd. Every single cut on this cd is good. All the performers fairly bristle with , non-pc, anti-L.A. smarts. The tone is pure pre-Madison Avenue country. But don't think this is a Return to Retro cd; it's not your Grandma's country. Even the cover of "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" is purely 21st century despite the homage to classic country artists in the execution. It's easy to see why these songs are the rage of the roadhouses. They speak to everyday situations, they've got a beat, and you can dance to them without wearing glitter and ugly shoes. "Beer, Bait & Ammo" is purely fun! The only way this song could be improved is by being the "Beer, Bait, Bible, Guns & Ammo". But I guess that wouldn't be as catchy. (I say this as a sincere Christian, avid fisher, and hunting advocate.) "What Would Willie Do?" is a send-up of the ubiquitous "What Would Jesus Do?" fad. You will choke on your weed listening to this one. "Pearl Snap Shirts" assures us that some things, at least, don't change. "See You In The Next Life" is a totally different take on the "She Done Left Me" theme. "Stray Dogs" is musically terrific but the technique used makes the lyrics a bit hard to understand except at top volume. Of course, it sounds BETTER at top volume. (Hint - Disgust your Hip-Hop friends with this one.) This is the cd you need in your car during rush-hour. You need this at work. You need to give this cd as a gift to people who need to hear real country. If you really love finger-snapping, toe-tapping country that's funny and sometimes ironic, you need this cd. You need it now. Go! ("Cow Hear This 2" has just been released - review coming."
