3.0 out of 5 stars Beware the Sequel!, July 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Cow Hear This 2 (Audio CD)
If "Cow Hear This!" was great, then "Cow Hear This! 2" was certain to be twice as great--so I bought it. Like most sequels, this was a sad disappointment.

I had played the original for 21-year-old son, who agreed to turn off Trick Daddy or 50 Cent or whichever yapper he was listening to and listen to my stuff. A true hater of music from the country, he fell in love with the Cow. So when Daughter of Cow came along, he was excited as I was. After listening to Cow2, he was as disappointed as I was.

Other than Kevin Fowler's "Senorita Mas Fina," there just ain't much to recommend. It's not so much that this is a dreadful CD as it is the CD's failure to live up to its predecessor. OK, perhaps Mark David Manders' "Drive" and Kevin Welch's "Killing Myself" aren't too bad, but they aren't Cow1 good either.

A note to the Cowpendia people: Take a good look at what you did on the Cow1--and then do it again!

Would I take advice from someone who can't even spell it? Well, in this case yes. I've listened to Cow 2 several more times and agree that a one star was unfair. So I've raised it to three stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Like Roots, Americana, Y'alt Country - Buy Now, May 20, 2003

The good folks at Cowpendia have done it again and just in time. When I stumbled across "Cow Hear This" I couldn't get enough and now I've got more!

Who's this for? It's for anyone who likes their music heart-felt, sometimes loud, and sometimes funny. This isn't the Nashville sound, no offense to Travis and Faith; this is the sound you need to hear if you are from the country (like me) or just wish you were.

Although all the songs on this cd are good, a few stand out.

Kevin Fowler reappears with "Senorita Mas Fina"; a toe-tapping Tex-Mex zinger with a nice little blend of mariachi-meets-Texas.

Kieran Kane gives us "June Carter (Sure Can Sing)". I loved this song before the headlines and I find it even more compelling now. Kane uses the same down home style and instruments the Carter Family were famous for in this tribute. The sly dig at Nashville is also welcome and this song is so pure in tone and feel, you may feel tempted to sing it at church!

"God Loves It When We Dance" is a catchy yet spare tune that captures both old time hymn-singing and the pared down new trends in Roots. Jones has the sincere and compelling vocal style that is both old and cutting edge.

"Shut Up And Dance" by Aaron Watson is a terrific romantic song without being either mushy or sappy.

You'll be singing along with "Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other" by Joe Nichols. This has a beat and you can dance to it. The usual mystification we all feel - "How the heck did I get here?" is summed up in the line "It can't be me, must be the company I'm keepin'".

If I haven't mentioned a particular song, it's not because it wasn't good but because I can only write so much. This has Swing, a great Ray Price song, and just about anything you need.

The great thing about both these cds is the fact that it will turn you on to about 20 artists/bands you can follow up. They all have cds and you can get what you like without being hand-fed by those phonies on the either coast or Nashville. If those folks really knew what we liked...well, less said, the better.

Buy this - buy this now (I had to).
