Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1–As a farmer makes his daily rounds, readers learn what he feeds his animals and how often. “Whenever Farmer knows what the horse,/he feeds the horsey hay, of course./The horse just loves to nibble hay./He eats it every single day. ” In a twist, readers are reminded after each animal's feeding, “But the cow loves cookies.” As the cumulative story progresses, what each creature eats is repeated in successive fashion. “The geese munch corn; it tastes so fine./The hogs think slop is just divine./The dog adores his doggy treats./But Cow would rather eat things sweet….” The story ends with Farmer and Cow sharing cookies and milk. The cleverly rhyming text and pace of the story make it perfect for a read-aloud. The whimsical ink and watercolor illustrations add to the humor. An instant storytime crowd pleaser.Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH

From Booklist

Why does the cow named in the title love cookies? The answer makes a warm, funny, repetitive story. Hogs eat slop: “They love to eat the gooey glop.” “The geese honk for joy and flap their wings. They love the corn that Farmer brings.” But the cow loves cookies. Why? The big, clear watercolor pictures with thick ink lines leave lots of white space, and the simple rhyming lines, with descriptive words and messy action, will encourage preschoolers to join in. The image of the cow sticking her head through the kitchen window to slurp up the newly baked cookies is as entertaining as the picture of a grinning horse nibbling hay. A culminating scene shows the farmer with the cow taking a sweet snack break together. Even after kids learn why the cow loves cookies, they will enjoy going back to the story's beginning and delighting in the sounds of the words and the delicious rhymes. Preschool-Grade 2. --Hazel Rochman

More About the Author

I'm a wife, mother of three, writer and photographer. I love to write fun stories, poems, songs, etc... I especially love to write in rhyme because I think that well written rhyme naturally teaches children to expand their vocabulary and love books and reading.

I spend my time in the wilds of northwest Montana, where there are lots of bears and animals like the ones in my bear books! I love the wilderness and all of the animals that live there. My husband and children are also avid lovers of the outdoors.

I am also an amateur photographer. Give me a camera and I'll spend hours snapping photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful sure fire storytime winner, July 10, 2010
This review is from: The Cow Loves Cookies (Hardcover)
The Cow Loves Cookies has it all. It's a great rhyme; it's sing-song nature just begs to be read aloud, it has colorful illustrations with expressive farm animals, a repeating refrain that will pull in an audience, and a tag line at the end that will be sure to get the laughs. This is a great take on the traditional farm story. Instead of cow goes moo, etc.., we get horses eat hay, pigs eat slop, geese eat corn, chicken eat chicken feed, and dogs get treats. So why does The Cow Love Cookies? Well, the answer is one that just about every kid will appreciate. A big recommend for toddlers and preschoolers. It's the perfect length so even the youngest story timers won't get bored. This one belongs in every story time collection.

This review is from: The Cow Loves Cookies (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this book so much, I bought one for each of our grown children to read with their children. I read "The Cow Loves Cookies" to my friends at the nursing home and special things happened there, too. People "helped" read the story with me, some laughed, some pointed bony aging fingers toward the lively farm animals. One time saliva dripped out of a friend's mouth. Her smile was priceless. Another non-verbal friend asked me to come back and read it again.

How fun to watch facial expressions change from curiosity to understanding! I especially enjoyed keeping the secret answer to why the cow loves cookies until the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Your preschoolers next favorite book!, August 22, 2010
This review is from: The Cow Loves Cookies (Hardcover)
You might get a little craving for cookies and milk after reading this book. It's full of short and simple text with big, bright and colorful illustrations. But what I loved most about this book was the reason why the cow loves cookies. The book describes what happens on a typical farm day. The horse eats hay, the chickens eat chicken feed, the geese eat sweet corn, the hogs eat slop, the dogs eat dog treats but, "the cow would rather eat things sweet." The farmer and cow eat lunch with each other everyday. Together that have worked out a plan to share their food. One brings the cookies while the other provides the milk.
