Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Marjorie the cow feels just plain ordinary. She wishes she could ride bicycles and do handstands like the other cows, so the cunning chickens hatch a plan to help her out. The next morning, there’s an almighty commotion in the barnyard; Marjorie has laid an egg. The other cows are convinced it’s a trick—until Marjorie’s egg cracks open and the newly hatched chick bellows  “Moo.” This is a great comic take on the Ugly Duckling tale, with double-page spreads in ink, watercolor, and pencil showing comical farm creatures and humans, who are every bit as ridiculous as the animals. The fun is in the details, especially the black Holstein-like patches on Marjorie’s egg. Preschool-Grade 2. --Hazel Rochman

Review

'The Cow That Laid an Egg... had me in stitches. More than just a silly story about a cow who thinks she's laid an egg, there's something deeper here about the idea of family, but it's so integral to the story that you dn't feel as thought you've been hit over the head with the sledgehammer of worthiness.' The Bookseller Praise for 'The Witch's Children' 'This book has been wonderfully designed and the text is in perfect harmony with the incredible funny illustrations' Booktrust Best Books Guide Praise for 'Tim, Ted and the Pirates' 'A witty and wholly satisfying fantasy that rattles along at a great pace.' 5.0 out of 5 stars Eggstraordinarily Silly!, June 1, 2009
A cow that lays an egg? We picked this book up because of the silly title alone. The illustrations are a riot (like the page showing cows riding bicycles and doing handstands)! Somehow Marjorie the cow lays a egg, spotted mysteriously black & white just like a Holstein cow. The other cows are suspicious. The chickens ain't talkin'. The farmer hams it up in front of the news media. Sure, it's the Scam of the Century, but it's a great story about friends (The chickens) helping out a friend (Marjorie) when she was feeling low. And the ending, when the egg finally hatches, will "crack" you up!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for adoptive families! Funny and entertaining!, October 26, 2010
This review is from: The Cow That Laid an Egg (Hardcover)
We just got brought this home from the library today. I picked it simply because of the colorful cover and I figured my 3 and 4 year old would find a cow laying an egg entertaining.

We read the story and got so much more. Here is the run down: the cow feels badly because she can't do some of the things the other cows can. The chickens notice her sadness and hatch a plot. She wakes up and has mysteriously laid an egg. The other cows get jealous and when the egg hatches they proclaim she didn't lay the egg and that a chicken has hatched. But the little chick says "MOOO."

The illustrations are hilarious and the story is touching. Having an adopted child- I reread the story with an emphasis on an adoption theme- pointing out the love the cow had for the egg, how she took it for walks and protected it. And that even though the cow did not grow her baby in her tummy the way other cows do (theres no mention of this in the story- its just something I added) she clearly loves her baby. And the baby knows her mama from the moment she hatches.

This is a great way tool to help younger children understand adoption. For both adoptive families and non-adoptive families.

I love this book so much I will be purchasing it in hardcover- and I felt compelled to write a review immediately!
