5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR BILINGUAL CHILDREN
Bernard Most has a great way of getting his message across in a very simple way. A cow says "oink" and is made fun of by other cows. He looks the same as the other cows but his language is different. Then comes a pig that says "moo"; the other pigs make fun of him. The cow and pig end up together and teach their "language" to each...

This is the story of a cow that could only oink and a pig that could only moo. They were laughed at and made fun of by the other animals, until they got together and taught each other to make the other sound. So, then they were the only animals on the farm who could do both. Then comes a pig that says "moo"; the other pigs make fun of him. The cow and pig end up together and teach their "language" to each other. The two truly become bilingual! A nice book to help children NOT make fun of those who speak a different language. They can truly learn from each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent therapy tool for speech/language pathology!, May 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Cow That Went OINK (Hardcover)
This book covers all the bases for a teacher or speech/language pathologist: peer acceptance, team work, perseverance, pragmatics, sequencing, and play on words! I love it! I have used it with K-2 using felt characters to act out the story and the kids love it! Some of them get very pensive as if they are all too familiar with the character's struggles. My only complaint is the ending. I am careful to explain or minimize the ending because I didn't like that they laughed back at the other animals.

From a parent and kindergarten teacher's perspective, this is a fantastic book. It is one of our family's favorites. We laugh throughout the book each time we read it. Bernard Most's simple and clever use of language and illustrations makes it a classic to read over and over. I have recommended this book to many parents and teachers. It is also a wonderful book for pre and emergent readers to read with adults.

I read this book many times and recommended it as a Children's Librarian. This book is great for the young and the young and heart. I will never tire of this book. Bernard Most captures the way humans can act to someone who has just one thing different from his or her peers through the animals. The book shows that everyone may not be alike, but is to be accepted. This is great how the cow becomes friends with a pig that has a similiar problem to his own. This is a great book, especially for Toddlers.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter absolutely *loves* this book, June 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Cow That Went OINK (Hardcover)
My wife stumbled upon Bernard Most's books at a Zany Brainy store closing sale. She bought "Oink Ha!" and our daughter (2 years old) loved it. So from the description of this book, I bought it for her. It has now become her favorite book!

She thinks it's funny for a cow to oink and a pig to moo! And she loves the sounds they both make while learing to moo/oink (oinomoo, moink! ;0).

Bernard Most really has our daughter's number. He's a favorite around our house.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad message, so-so illustrations, drags on, February 2, 2010
This review is from: The Cow That Went OINK (Paperback)
This is the story of a cow that could only oink and a pig that could only moo. They were laughed at and made fun of by the other animals, until they got together and taught each other to make the other sound. So, then they were the only animals on the farm who could do both. The main characters are then depicted as turning around and laughing at the other animals because they don't have the same skill.

First of all, I don't like the message of this book. It's certainly the natural response to want to get back at those who have made fun of you, but that's not what I'm trying to teach my children (ages 9 and under). Yes, it's going to be difficult, but they don't need encouraged to think that it's appropriate to be unkind to those who have been unkind to them.

To even understand the point of this story, the child needs to already know animal sounds and know them well, or he's going to be confused by the point of the story and confused about which animal makes which sound.

The illustrations are nothing to write home about. They are somewhat drab in appearance and not very engaging.

This book is nothing more than a silly story with a bad moral. I also don't enjoy reading it to my children; it just drags on and on. There are plenty of children's books out there that have some value (e.g. a good lesson, teaching rhyming, etc) and are enjoyable for me as a parent to read, which means they are read more often.

Personally, I would not recommend this book to anyone. Other young children's books that I would recommend The Little Red Hen Big Book, The Itsy Bitsy Spider, Ten Little Ladybugs, Big Red Barn, Over in the Meadow, and I Will Rejoice: Celebrating Psalm 118. Try one of those instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book! One of my Son's Favorites!!, September 25, 2007

This review is from: The Cow That Went OINK (Paperback)
"The Cow That Went Oink" is a wonderful children's book that helps children appreciate and even celebrate their differences while getting a good laugh. This ranks as one of my son's favorite books.

The other barnyard animals laugh at the Cow because it can only say "oink" and laugh at the pig because it can only say "moo". The cow and the pig help each other learn to speak their "native languages" and in the process surpass the animals who have made fun of them.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for ANY child, but especially for children who are struggling with their differences in preschool and kindergarten.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful barnyard humor, November 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Cow That Went OINK (Hardcover)
I would like to thank the author for creating a terrific picture book which is a surefit hit every time I read it to a group of kids. As a children's librarian, I have a few titles that are always winners, and this is definitely one of them! The children always respond to this silly story with its great barnyard sounds as the cow and pig try to learn the new "words" oink and moo. And it has a nice lesson about persevering, which is an added bonus. Fun stuff!
