A Hipster's Guide to the World of Bebop,

Having wanted the Japanese version of Newtype's 100% Cowboy Bebop for some time now, I was pleasantly surprised to see a smaller guide in English at my local bookstore. It didn't jump out at me, that's for sure. Measuring in at about a slim 7 x 5.5 inches, the book fits basically anywhere you want it to, including coffee tables or small bookshelves and the likes. But don't let the size fool you, it's packed with basically anything anyone would want to know about the first five episodes of the series, from basic information about the characters to tidbits about seemingly minor incidents and the lyrics of the songs in English and Romanji (phonetic Japanese). There's a small section after the overview of the episodes that goes over the lives of Spike, Jet, and the rest of the gang. Ein and Spike are personally my favorite characters in the whole series, and even Ein gets his own character bio. The print quality is average to above average and the guide is littered with pictures and captions for Sessions 1-5 of the anime. The 14 pages of character designs in black and white in the back of the book are a nice complement to the colorful layouts on the rest of the pages. They seriously show nearly every, if not every, character shown in Cowboy Bebop episodes 1-5. I have a few Gundam data books in Japanese, so it's nice to finally have an anime guide in English that I can read as well as look at the pictures. While the quality might not hold up to other Newtype publications such as the big honkin' Newtype 100% Neon Genesis Evagelion guide (in Japanese), I found the Cowboy Bebop Anime Guide 1 to be something no serious fan should be without. This should definately pique the interest of anyone who still hasn't seen the series as well as fit nicely into any fan's anime or manga library.

The 'cowboy Bebeop Anime Guide 1' -the first out of six volumes- starts off with a few character bios, then gives summaries and information on the first six episodes of the series. The last few chapters deal with the setting of Cowboy Bebop universe, with a chapter explaining about bounty hunters along with files on the items used by the characters and lots of sketches on everything from the types of spacesuits used to the character of Vicious.The information is interesting, but most of it can be found if you have the DVDs. This book would make a good gift for Cowboy Bebop fans who have everything else or for people who need the information at their fingertips, like fan fiction writers. Lots of color pictures right from the anime help fill out the work but it still feels kind of weak.

I'm a huge Cowboy Bebop fan, I own the series on DVD and preordered the movie a long time ago. I bought this book thinking that it would be full of cool facts and info that you wouldn't pick up from the actual DVD, but it's really just a synopsis of each episodes with a bunch of pictures from each episode. There are a few pages of extras, but they are mostly some rough sketches and short bios, nothing really worth the price of this book.If this was half the price, it might be worth it, but even then I would only suggest this for the absolute collector that must have every Cowboy Bebop related piece of merchandise out there, regardless of quality. For the casual fan, or even the more fanatic, it's simply not worth the money.
