Book Description

Severn House Large Print January 1, 2002
It is the summer of 1939 - the last, glorious summer before the war. In Craigton, a small Scottish seaside-resort, holiday-makers are enjoying a carefree season of tennis-parties, picnics and romance, untroubled by the clouds of war.

Lisa Cowan is nineteen, beautiful and innocent. She too falls in love that summer, with Neil McLean, a handsome pilot. But during the years that follow, as hostilities escalate, Lisa and her family suffer their share of hardship and tragedy. Her mother, an art dealer with a secret buried in her past, falls ill, and her brother Tommy is compelled by his principles to become a Conscientous Objector. By the time the war ends Lisa will have grown into a wiser but sadder woman, strong enough to build her mother's art dealership into a successful business, yet vulnerable still to love...

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In August 1939 the world is on the brink of war, and Lisa Cowan is in love. She met him on the tennis courts at Craigton, while summering by the sea. Moody and reserved, Neil McLean is a pilot in the RAF Reserves. But as the war progresses, Lisa realizes that she was really in love with the idea of love and that Neil may never be able to commit wholeheartedly to her. Childhood friends Beryl and Bruce meet, marry, and are now blissfully happy on his family farm. Lisa, by contrast, keeps herself busy at home and in art school; then, after her mother's death, she takes over her art gallery. When Neil is lost in a bombing raid over Cologne, Lisa must carry on: people are depending on her. The strength and allure of this atypical romance lie in the powerfully drawn characters and settings that illuminate the sacrifices made by those who keep homes and businesses running for those who are away at war.
