This is an outstanding children's book that is enjoyed by all four children and Mom and Dad in our home. Clyde is a war horse who is afraid of his own shadow. He overcomes his fear to save Sir Galavant, the noble but crazy knight who insists on waking the ogre to give it a fighting chance. Your chilfren will enjoy this book!

A True Ker-Puffle of a Delight!,
By
This review is from: Cowardly Clyde (Paperback)
This wonderful book appeals to my 5 year old boy because of the somewhat scary monster, the brave knight, but ultimately the courageous horse who must over come his cowardice to save his master Sir Galavant. I was impressed with Peet's use of assonance and alliteration and over-all word choice: "...The faint-hearted horse was horrified." This is super book and I recommend it highly - and the illustrations are beautiful to boot.

Sure to spark the imagination,

Author of THE REBEL'S PLEDGE and soon to be published THORNS IN EDEN.Cowardly Clyde was my oldest son's favorite children's story when he was little. I love this book. Clyde the war horse is the hero of the story instead of the knight in shining armor. This book teaches that one can be brave when the need arises and risk life and limb for a friend. A must among childrens literature.

My Son's Favorite,
By Jasmine Grimmett (Missouri) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cowardly Clyde (Paperback)
We checked this book out at the library...and it has turned out to be my son's absolute favorite! I can't believe it..but he loves turning the pages over and over and looking at the scary monster. (He is 16 months old.) He is a little impatient for me to read the text as of yet, but he loves the noises I make to go along with the story. His favorite part is when the monster explodes (I say "Ka-boom" even though the text says "Ker-puffle") All in all-excellent job!! (I even rated it 5 stars with a longer review on epinions.com)

My 4 kids all LOVE Bill Peet books. They enjoyed this one very much. Although this story does not rhyme like many of his others, we all recommend it.

Cowardly Clyde is a Hit!,

This review is from: Cowardly Clyde (Paperback)
Cowardly Clyde is a wonderful story about courage and the illustrations are great. I checked this book out of the library to read to my 4-year-old and he loves it so much I had to buy it for him. Now my 3-month-old is enjoying listening to me read this story to his older brother and seems to love the story too. This was my first Bill Peet story but, now that I've read many of them, I've discovered he's one of the best children's authors ever!

Somewhat Disappointing,
By James Charnock (USA) - See all my reviews

Bill Peet is not up to his usual quality of writing in COWARDLY CLYDE (1979). One senses a building story, but the climax falls short, even for a (fairy) tale. The pictures are great, but the climax is too simple, unrealistic (yes, I know this is of the "fantastic" genre), and quick, and will leave the young reader or listener with disappointment. I know other reviewers point to moral, emotional, social and character-building lessons the book MAY teach, but all I can say--as someone who has read many such GOOD tales for both my own pleasure and young students'--I was disappointed.

I loved Bill Peet books as a child, and I still really like them today. I recently bought the whole set so that my children will have them, and realized that I remember every character and every plot from 20+ years ago when my parents read them to me. They really made an impact on me. The illustrations are cute and captivating, the characters are engaging, the stories and well told, and each book has a meaning. There are few authors who can create such a fine balance in childrens' books.

Cowardly Clyde is the favorite book of my 4 year old grandson. He has said often after we finish reading it together, "Read it again grandpa!". Bill Peet does a great job of illustrating his books & writes engaging stories about redeemed animal heroes who become aware their selfishness & pride and then decide help their masters and/or friends. We have purchased many of his books.
