This review is from: Cowboy Bebop - Jamming With Edward (Vol. 5) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This was another great anime tape, but not the height of Bebop genius. In the first episode, 'Jamming with Edward' the crew expands as Ed, a girl hacker from earth, joins the Bebop because of a promise made to her in exchange for help catching a bounty. She's a great character full of blood sugar and spice. The animator's always do an excellent job drawing her simple yet over the top expressions. Although a child character is commonly placed to round the harsh corners of a story, Ed is not only sweet but vicious and territorial like an animal when situations force her. She is more of a clown/wild card then a dampening force inside the stories. Ed's voice actress doesn't do justice to her Japanese counterpart; this is the only time I can say that about almost any dub voices in recent anime. For the first time in the series we are introduced to the Earth of 2071, a burned out, damaged reminant of its past glory. The second episode deals with Jet's past life and love on Ganymede. 'Ganymede Elegy' is a decent, although simplistic story explaining and concluding Jet Black's back story leading up to Bebop (but this won't be the last time we see his past in the series). Sweet, touching, complex and insightful personalities and situations give the latter episode on the tape a very emotive almost soap-oreraesqe feeling. Good stuff all 'round. Better episodes are coming.

As it said, a must see. I own all the cowboy bebop episodes and I must say that it is an amazing series with great graphics. Also with Spike, the main person, who just oozes the coolness. But I have to say that Edward Wong Hau Pepilu Trivuski the 4 is my favorite characture. She is too cool 4 words. One crazy hacker you don't want abord your ship!

Huh... an anime kid who doesn't make me want to pull out my hair or punch the TV. Cool. The introduction of Ed in Episode 9 really helped pull the cast together. The monkey-like yet lovable little hacker was just so gosh-darned cute that I couldn't hate her. In this episode we also get to see what remains of Earth and rather innovative visuals for comptuer hacking which go well beyond the typical Gibson-esque yellow grid on black with geometric shapes bouncing around. Episode 10 helped to flesh out Jet Black's history and took us back to Ganymede (as was seen in Episode 4). His beautiful yet sad former love seemed as well-thought out as any of the main cast. And subtle details (like a 14 hour Ganymede pocket watch) really made this episode memorable.

This volume brings Cowboy Bebop back to where it is now one of my favorite shows. In the first episode on this volume, Episode 9, the last of the main characters who join the Bebop crew is introduced. This character, Ed, loves to hack around with computers. Those of you who grew up in the 1960's will love Ed... this character is as weird as one of those flower children! And as you may guess, Episode 9 does involve computers as well... How, you may ask? Well, satellites controlled by computers are drawing doodles on Earth! But who is controlling them? The suspense builds up as Spike and the others attempt to solve the mystery.... Episode 10 gives us a glimpse into Jet Black's past life... it seems that he used to be a police officer on Ganymede, and this past will be important to hunting down the bounty in this episode. It involves a lost love of Jet's, and this girl's new boyfriend. But as Spike and Jet find out, this new boyfriend has a bounty on his head! Can Jet stick to his sense of duty and capture the bounty? Stay tuned. BTW, the volume ends with a preview of an episode that is one of the scariest previews that I have ever seen....
