5.0 out of 5 stars Belizean Discovery
I was recently on a once in a lifetime vacation from my home in Vermont to Ambergris Caye in Belize. I stepped into a hotel to cool of in the middle of the heat of the day, and I noticed a picture of a guy on the wall holding a huge fish. He (the guy, not the fish) looked familiar and I recognized it to be Jerry Jeff Walker. I learned that he had come to San Pedro...

2.0 out of 5 stars Just OK, I'd pass on this one
This is an OK CD. Not one of his better efforts. The best song on this CD, Boats To Build was of course not written by Jerry Jeff but by Guy Clark. It is very dissapointing to see Jerry Jeff's lack of original songwriting in recent years. His best stuff has always been songs not written by him but atleast he used to write a decent song once in awhile

5.0 out of 5 stars Belizean Discovery, March 12, 2000

I was recently on a once in a lifetime vacation from my home in Vermont to Ambergris Caye in Belize. I stepped into a hotel to cool of in the middle of the heat of the day, and I noticed a picture of a guy on the wall holding a huge fish. He (the guy, not the fish) looked familiar and I recognized it to be Jerry Jeff Walker. I learned that he had come to San Pedro and recorded "Bathing Suits and Cowboy Boots" which came out in 1997. It is truly a beautiful album, both for musical content and for conveying the flavor of this wonderous place. Jerry Jeff shines on this bare bones but exceptional production, which seems "live" even on the tracks that aren't. Guitar work by John Inmon is superb, as is the pedal steel and slide by producer Lloyd Maines. Favorite tracks are "Come Away to Belize with Me", "Gringo in Belize", "Those Were the Days" and I can still hardly listen to "The Moon is Still Over Her Shoulder" and the title cut without getting misty eyed. Ever the "weaker" cuts on this CD are great. I feel as though I've lucked out doubly: another great album by the man who continues to do his thing as has been for decades, AND... a lasting memory of the beauty and friendliness of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. Did I say "once in a lifetime vacation"? No way... and I have this album to inspire me to return again someday soon. Buy this one, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gringo national anthem, May 16, 2005

"Just another Gringo in Belize" is kindof a national anthem for the gringos here. See www.localgringos.com or www.belizenorth.com (my site) to find out more about Belize.
The songs are all about rain, and hammocks, and rum and <sigh> weed, which is illegal but ubiquitous.
If you want to visit, do it now, before the crowds turn San Pedro into another Cancun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jerry Jeff out Buffett's Jimmy Buffett, July 13, 2004

This is a fantastic album. JJ found the equation for the 3:30 vacation song that Jimmy Buffett lost years ago. The CD has had a perminant place in my 12 disc changer since it was released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD even if you're not a JJW fan!, February 17, 2000

I am a new JJW fan. My first CD of his was Great Gonzos and I was hooked on his music since. Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits gives you a little tropical flavor. The music is very catchy and will have you listening to it over and over again. My mom listened to my copy and she ordered her own immediately!

This is a wonderful CD. You can really feel the emotions of living in paradise and then having to return to reality. Jerry Jeff is as creative as ever and still has that touch. It really made us long to go to Belize, and we did, with Jerry Jeff along all the way!

I have been a Jerry Jeff fan for years and seen countless shows, but I have to admit that this CD is my favorite to date. Every time I here it,I feel like I'm on the beach and laid back. Any CD that can do that for me gets 5 stars any day!

Jerry Jeff's talents never seem to end. "Cowboy Boots & Bathing Suits" represents a migration from his traditional "Texas Country" sound to a lively, foot tapping beach tempo that posesses that one of a kind Jerry Jeff sound!

This CD is a must for your Jerry Jeff collection, you will not be disapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best from Jerry Jeff in years, easy style great songs, February 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cowboy Boots & Bathin Suits (Audio CD)
A style departure for Jerry Jeff, very easy and relaxing that was recorded in Belize at his second home. The easy listening pure joy of the surroundings are apparent in the music. There is not a bad song here. Boats to Build, Sloop John b., add a nautical flair that holds the island theme. Ballads like the Moon is Still over her Shoulder are welcome, and the true love of the area and the Carribean life style is truly felt in the Title track at the end that makes you feal as if you are at the end of a memorable vacation. A must for the JJ Walker collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, lazy and fantastic, September 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cowboy Boots & Bathin Suits (Audio CD)
Jerry Jeff has a way of making old songs new. His touch on Guy Clark's "Boats to Build" on this CD is sheer joy and is alone worth the cost of the CD. All the other cuts are gravy. This CD is a little heavy on covers, but I can understand - that Belize sun can get to you!
