I love McCallister, and I loved this book.

It was a very different Category, largely because of it's scope: it spans five years in the relationship. And it IS a relationship, instead of the usual Cat formula of instant attraction, angsty interactions, melodramatic separation, and sudden, implausible HEA.

The hero is a rodeo rider, with a short attention span and yen for the road. He is perfectly happy just dropping in when the mood strikes. Because of her age and general life inexperience at first, and later her family circumstances, it works for the heroine, too . . . in the beginning. But she grows up, and he doesn't.

The author doesn't create some contrived past betrayal that has emotionally crippled the hero. He's just this immature cowboy, leading a fairly insular life in a circle of equally stunted rodeo guys, who thinks marriage is for old people. He'll think about it when he's forty. (That still makes me laugh).

It was funny, and sweet, and beautiful, and heartbreaking - all in very real ways. HIGHLY recommended.
