Classic Diana Palmer!,
By "kat873" (Northeast PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cowboy And The Lady (Mass Market Paperback)
The Cowboy and the Lady is a must read for all Diana Palmer fans. It has all the trademarks of her writing; dominant man, woman down on her luck who adores the hero, but hates him in the same breath. Great Valentines Day read for true romantics. At 18, Amanda Carson left west Texas, family scandal and a man she was determined to forget. But the Whitehall empire was vast, and when the powerful Texas family wanted something-including Amanda and her advertising agency-they got it. At sprawling Casa Verde, old fires were burning with intense fury. Jace Whitehall, a man Amanda hated and desired with equal intensity, was ready and waiting to finish what began years ago. Now, they must confront searing truths about both their families. Long-buried secrets that shattered so many lives are about to be exposed. And the very thing that drove Amanda from this land may be the only thing able to keep her there. I bought this book as an original issue and have kept it since. It is one of my all-time favorites as it is a definite KEEPER for any true romance novel lover. If you enjoyed her Long, Tall Texans series, Rawhide Man, Cattleman's Choice or Friends and Lovers, you will LOVE this book!

REPRINT,
By DonnaRee15 (Somewhere in my head...in IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Cowboy and the Lady (Harlequin Famous Firsts) (Mass Market Paperback)
WARNING - this is a reprint from 1982.As usual, I found the hero to be too emotionally hurtful to his heroine; and the heroine was a bit too immature acting. I got tired of her always telling Jace "I hate you!" and "Go to hell!". That was her answer for just about everything. The story keeps going only because of constant misunderstandings between the two characters - another thing I found irritating because it seemed these two could never communicate with each other, they just kept slinging insults back and forth. How they're supposed to be able to make a good marriage in the end and actually make it last forever - I have absolutely no idea. I'm always a sucker for a Diana Palmer novel because they're almost always western romances (my fav genre), but at the same time I know I'm going to come away from the novel disliking it because of the way she has the hero and heroine act with one another. The guy is always controlling, mean and insulting and the woman always takes it. She may get mouthy with him, but in the end of course she ends up with him. If you're already a Diana Palmer reader then you know exactly what to expect from this book (more of the same). If you've never read her before I really can't recommend this one as being the one to start you off with. Actually, my best advice would be don't start reading her at all because despite all her accolades of being such a great author, in my opinion she really isn't.

Not What I Expected,
By Trinity (Northern Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cowboy And The Lady (Mass Market Paperback)
When I saw this book in the bookstore I couldn't wait to get home and start reading it. The book started off with a bang and then took a nose dive. I have never in all my reading seen a heroine as weak as Amanda and I have seen plenty but this was Ridiculous. The Mother was trifling and "Jace" although good-looking was mean as hell one minute and honey this the next and if I had to hear about her slender body and hands more time I thought I would scream. Overall I did not like this book what- so-ever.

More 'JACE' Please,
By Chasity Carter "Chasity Carter" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Cowboy and the Lady (Harlequin Famous Firsts) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jace Whitehall is an alpha-male unable to come to terms with his feelings for Amanda Carson. His personality reminds me of Edward in Twilight. Jace goes out of his way to avoid Amanda when she visits his ranch on his brother's request for a business proposal. When Amanda and Jace come together, it isn't always pleasant and Amanda can't understand why he acts as if he hates her. From an affluent family that lost their wealth and their clout, Amanda realizes there is a mutual dislike between her mother and the man she loves. A hidden family secret is one Jace reveals in a cruel manner but he regrets the way in which he discloses the past to Amanda, realizing the truth may forever keep him from the woman he loves. This is a great novella but it wasn't without a few glitches. Amanda and Jace banter back and forth until they run out of arguments to support. They have an undeniable attraction but play cat and mouse games too which I liked but didn't necessarily understand given the age of the hero and heroine. I wanted to give this book four and a half stars but the rushed ending prevented a five-star rating. In spite of the abrupt ending, Diana Palmer pens an enchanting novella in The Cowboy and the Lady leaving this reader groveling for more story. If you happen to read this review and know of a sequel to this book, please comment and leave the title. I'm anticipating more Jace Whitehall or hopeful his brother takes the lead in a sequel.

Ok read,
This review is from: The Cowboy and the Lady (Harlequin Famous Firsts) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was OK, but I often felt confused by the characters. Jace was always so hot and cold. When the book was finished, I wondered where the rest of the book was. I felt like the intimacy was missing...sure a few flirty episodes, but not much real romance. An OK read to let your mind wander for a few hours.

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED,
This review is from: The Cowboy and the Lady (Harlequin Famous Firsts) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was introduced to Diana Palmer through the story "Fire & Ice" .. It's one of my favorite novels in the world !! I LOVE it !! That being said.. I've noticed some of her other books not being anywhere as good as this.. there's way too much cruel verbal abuse going on.. I love the heated .. passionate arguements between some of her characters.. but some left me wanting to put down some of her books.. I may have read a re-written (re-released?) version of one of her books recently from the library.."The Cowboy and The Lady"--- I only liked maybe 3 pages.. when his tone was tender.. and he tried to soothe things over.. but I mean.. keep calling a virgin and her mother a slut.. and treating her like trash.. he made her cry one too many times.. I do wish she had more of a backbone.. she seemed too doormat of a woman. I couldn't believe she'd let him insult her (seriously going overboard with the insults) so harshly while he was copping a feel without swatting his hand away and leaving or something ! She's always apologizing to him !!!!!!!!!!!! The whole horse accident/hospital incident.. and the thinking the flowers were from Duncan.. and her mother's "relationship" with his parents.. I'm at a loss for words... I only kept reading in hopes that it would get better.. I'm all for big manly alpha males..sparks flying and passion.. but this was beyond ridiculous and left a bad taste. One of the worst romance novels I have ever read.. and I don't say that proudly.. I'm so disappointed.. because I felt like Diana Palmer had something.. in some of her books.. but when I read this one.. I was pretty much disgusted.. and I've read a lot of romance novels from different authors/genres.. I cannot believe the 4-5 star reviews.. I would give her that as an author.. BUT not for this book.. this was (in my opinion) one of her weakest works.

A POWERFUL BOOK,
By
This review is from: The Cowboy and the Lady (Harlequin Famous Firsts) (Mass Market Paperback)
THE COWBOY AND THE LADY automatically grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go until about the hundredth page. Very powerful! I couldn't put it down, needing desperately to find out what was going to happen next.About the middle of the book the writing/story settled down. There were something's, as a writer, I would have done differently. The abruptness of the main characters hatred and love for one another, constant changing was a little over the edge. But still, it was we written and a good story. If Ms. Palmer could have carried out the intensity she had from the first half, I would have easily marked this book as one of my top favorites. I had to wonder what became of, Tess. She appeared to be such a powerful character that would have been a great source of tension between the main characters. She up and vanish without a fight, never to be seen again. It would have been nice to see it played out before her abrupt disappearance. This story was a good learning tool for me as an aspiring writer. I see the gapes/missing pieces to my own writing reflected in this story. It also gave me hope. Hope that if Diana Palmer can go from this to where she is today, then one day I can, too.

Nothing more than O.K.,

This review is from: Cowboy And The Lady (Mass Market Paperback)
Ive read my share of Diana Palmer stories and always find them to be great. This one however, seems way too rushed at the end. At the last page i was like "where's the rest?" Jace is portrayed as emotionally tough, not wanting marriage, etc. and in the last couple pages he does a very sudden turn to a romantic man. A lot of the characters are left hanging and we don't get to see what happened to a lot of them. It's an ok book, but if it was a little longer it might have been better.
