5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful listening..., December 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cowboy Sally's Twilight Laments for Lost Buckaroos (Audio CD)
Sally Timms can really sing and her lyrics are outstanding. Her melodic and crystal clear, delicate voice really deliver some poignant lyrics. The more I listen to this CD the more I want to listen to it. I not only purchased one for myself, but I have given it to two other people. Dreaming Cowboy is probably my favorite of a number of great songs on this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beautifully haunting voice of Sally lingers..., October 9, 2000

...for a long time after the songs are done. I've been a long time fan of the Mekons, and Sally's wonderful voice. As the years have gone by, I've been digging deeper and deeper into the American folk music and country music catalogs out there, and have been a big fan of the whole "Alt-country" or "No Depression" genere that's been going on. Needless to say, I was pleased to hear Jon Langford and Sally Timms had ventured off in this direction as well. Sally's EP "Cowboy Sally" and this newest full length disc "Twilight Laments..." are beautifully done gems. Sally sings covers ranging from Dolly Parton to the Handsome Family (another favorite of mine from the Chicago indie scene), and does them all wonderful tribute with her etheral vocals.

I had a chance to see her and Jon Langford pass through town to promote their latest Bloodshot EP "Songs of Faith and Devotion". The show was wonderful, and Sally sang as beautiful as ever.

Five stars, and a welcome addition to my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding album from an unlikely cowgirl, July 2, 2002

This review is from: Cowboy Sally's Twilight Laments for Lost Buckaroos (Audio CD)
Sally sings these songs brilliantly, as though she was born for them, but she certainly wasn't. Sally is from Leeds in England (a city I know well) and began her musical career in punk rock. I am unfamiliar with her story, but it is clear that there has been a major transformation somewhere along the way.

Even though she has lived in America for many years now, she still has an English accent. The musicians are of a high calibre. They get their chance to shine, but it is Sally's haunting voice which is the outstanding feature of this album.

The songs all soft and slow - even her cover of Johnny Cash's Cry Cry Cry, which we all know as an uptempo rocker - it's almost unrecognisable here.

This album is pure magic, nothing like any mainstream album, nor like any other cowboy music that I've come across - cowboy albums are usually more upbeat than this. It is therefore difficult to say which customers this is most likely to appeal to, but it will certainly appeal to those, like me, who are always looking for something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars On a whim!, February 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cowboy Sally's Twilight Laments for Lost Buckaroos (Audio CD)
I read a review of a Sally Timms Concert (never heard of her) in the NY Times. On a whim I ordered "Cowboy Sally ..." and found the album to be superb (extraordinary?). It operates on many levels not the least of which is its deep sense of longing. After all, we all destined to become dreaming cowboys.

As other reviewers noted, this is a unique album by a great singer with a lovely voice. What I'd like to know is: "Who is 'Celine' credited for all instruments on the incredible "When The Roses Bloom Again."

The Bluegrass chops that kick that song off must come from somebody who grew up on Del McCoury. It could be Del McCoury! Along with McCoury's "High on a Mountain," Sally's version of "When the Roses Bloom Again" ranks at the top of my "Opening Measures that Grab You" list.

I absolutly recomend this disc. Miss Timms has a gorgeous voice, her diction is faultless and the melancolic sound of her music goes deep into the soul of the listener. I bought one for myself and sent one to my sister. So good it is.

I stumbled upon Sally's music by hearing a sample in a music store; I am so glad I bought it. She has a gorgeous voice, the music is wonderful. When the Roses Bloom Again is a great song; Dreamin' Cowboy is so much fun, sort of sad but fun. I like all the songs and am going crazy trying to find more of Sally's music. She is one in a million!

Do you want a good cry? Do you need a release? When this disc arrives, get a bottle of your favorite Merlot or Semillon, and pour yourself a glass. Have a box of tissues handy; when the wine is about half gone, forward "Twighlight Laments," to Cut #6 - "Sweetheart Waltz" and while it plays, reminisce about "him" or "her" . . . you know, the one from so many years ago, during that January week on Sanibel Island, or who you were amazed had so much depth when explaining Milton in the stacks until God-knows-when o'clock in the morning, and then the semester was suddenly over and . . . .

Then, play the whole thing through, stopping again at #6 for another good sob or two. You'll feel 10 lbs. lighter.

In the meantime you'll have met a Sad Milkman who falls in love with the moon, an unlucky town whose 'faster' women suffer a dark visitor and a couple who face the timeless tragedy of a promise to reunite left unfulfilled.

Ms. Timms' pure voice, easy lyric and full melodies, evoking the rich simplicity of the best bluegrass and posessed of a self-deprecating "Sons of the Pioneers" spirit is haunting and seductive and will become the disc you play over and over for a week or more as soon as you hear it. In fact, I'm listening to it now as I write this.

Thank You, Sally Timms. I'm a Lost Buckaroo, but I now know I'm not forgotten.

The best thing about this cd is that it is all Sally Timms. I've listened to the Mekons but she is not used as a lead singer enough, in my opinion. Her voice is obviously superior to the male singer in that group. Too bad today's country music stations are so mainstream, it would be nice to hear Sally (and others) on the radio, but the bland country boys and girls have taken control.

I ordered this album not really knowing what to expect, but it was one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. I ordered Emmylou Harris's Songs of the West at the same time, but this was actually better! It is very artisticly done, and touches my deepest emotions. It shows that western music and good art are not incompatible. Only two complaints: Cry, Cry, Cry & no lyricsheet.
