No gimmicks, just classic renderings of classic songs,

This review is from: Cowboy Songs (Audio CD)
This is a CD re-issue of a vinyl LP titled "Songs of the West" which came out 30 years ago. The collection certainly deserved to be re-released on compact disc. Ed McCurdy is a no-frills singer and guitarist who just nails these tunes with a wonderfully authentic sound. His versions of "Utah Caroll" and "Punching the Dough" are worth the purchase price all by themselves. "When the work's all done this fall" is also superb. If you are a fan/collector of U.S. cowboy ballads, you cannot go wrong with this album. It is fascinating to compare Ed McCurdy's presentation with the work done over the past decade by Michael Martin Murphy...he is also good, and deserves praise, along with Don Edwards, for keeping the old songs alive...but MMM and even Don tend to over-produce their albums, and fancy them up too much. This is one of the best records I've ever owned...it never gets stale.
