4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Quite A Departure From Cowboy Songs 3
This album has a very different sound from his other Cowboy Songs Series. Not that it is bad but be prepared for a more "pop" sound on some of the songs, especially "Born To Buck Bad Luck" which is not really a true MMM cowboy song. I really think this album is good never the less. "Born To Be A Cowboy" is a classic while "Utah...

2.0 out of 5 stars marginal cowboy music; ok commercial country
This cd is a departure from the true cowboy music in MMM's prior cowboy cd's. It has a "country" hue that may please MMM's early fans who long for his return to that category.

This album has a very different sound from his other Cowboy Songs Series. Not that it is bad but be prepared for a more "pop" sound on some of the songs, especially "Born To Buck Bad Luck" which is not really a true MMM cowboy song. I really think this album is good never the less. "Born To Be A Cowboy" is a classic while "Utah Carroll" is true to the traditional sound. "The Bunkhouse Orchestra" is a "square dance" type song that reminises "The Cowboy Christmas Ball" from his "Cowboy Christmas Album". I highly recommend this along with his even better album, "Cowboy Songs 3".

4.0 out of 5 stars The best song on this album is Born To Be a Cowboy, song #3, July 9, 1999

This review is from: Cowboy Songs Four (Audio CD)
The best song on this album is song #3, Born To Be a Cowboy! (but, it's not on your song list) It was written by a true working cowboy and fellow NM singing buddy of Michael's, R.W. Hampton. It's great traveling music, dance music, and it sums up how most of us cowboys feel when we think of all those good memories. Michael has come along way from his rock and folk roots, it seems he understands a cowboy's heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old favorites and dynamic new material, July 10, 1998

New, catchy tune: "Born to Buck Bad Luck" will soon be released as a country video. The selections on this release include tradtional cowboy songs and new material written by Michael Martin Murphey. "The Nighthawk" is a beautiful poem set to music. Often requested, "Little Joe the Wranger" is included on this dynamite new release. A must for MMM fans; great selection for cowboy song buffs; a real find for country music enthusiasts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but Not Superlative, December 24, 2004
This review is from: Cowboy Songs Four (Audio CD)
The first time I listened to this CD, I was terribly disappointed. I really didn't care for any of the songs save "Bunkhouse Orchestra". But I made myself listen to it a couple more times, and by about the 3rd listen, I realized it's actually very good. Just quite alot different from Cowboy 1 or 3. I'd been expecting another CD like those two, and when it was so completely different, I thought I didn't like it. But now it pretty much lives in my truck along with my other MMM CD's. It makes great road music. However, I still like Bunkhouse Orchestra is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A country gem, April 26, 2009
This review is from: Cowboy Songs Four (Audio CD)
A very worthy addition to Murphey's "Country Songs" series. Some of the songs, Like "Lonesome Dove", "Easy on the Pain", Run Toward the Light", and especially "Summer Ranges," were quite lovely, lyrical and well-matched to MMM's strong voice. He also sang the old chestnuts "Trail Song Medley", Utah Carroll", and "Little Joe the Wrangler" as though he'd just come in from a hard day on the trail and was finding relaxation sitting round the campfire, strumming and singing. "Old Horse" was very moving, I've just lost a loved animal companion so maybe I'm especially partial to this song. I found the entire CD to be very enjoyable, and MMM has never sounded better.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great cowboy (Western Music, not Country Music) CD, October 23, 2007

Like all of Michael Martin Murphy's "Cowboy Songs" CD's, you'll love the music the minute you hear it. However, I still love Cowboy Songs II the best.
