This is a live recording - just "Woody Paul" on fiddle, "Too Slim" on bass, and "Ranger Doug, the Idol of American Youth" on guitar. All three singing and carrying on. It should be listed in the "comedy" section as well - IT IS FUNNY!
The Riders in the Sky play COWBOY music. Pure cowboy music, in the tradition of Sons of the Pioneers, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers. None of the synthesizer-washed, big-production, string-section, countrified "pop" music that passes for "Western" music nowadays!
The title refers to their frequently-repeated axiom, "It might be the easy way, but it wouldn't be the Cowboy Way." The recording is full of comedic moments - "Mister Sincere," in which Too Slim gushes to the audience about how much they are loved by the group, and "The Salting of the Slug," a daring tale of adventure. But by and large, it is a recording of top-notch, genuine cowboy music, by three guys who know it well and love what they're doing.
If Riders in the Sky come to a state fair near you, DON'T MISS `EM! In the meantime, treat yourself to this recording, that really captures the essence of those live performances.

The thing that I like most about this album is that it's their major label/studio debut, but it comes across as one of the intimate shows that they used to do years ago. They invited an audience into the studio with them, and so you not only get the songs, but the humorous banter that RITS fans know and love so well. Buy this album.

Not only are all the songs good, but the lightly sarcastic transitional banter between each musician combines to form a rare glue which makes for a timeless CD to which this fan never tires of listening.
Who needs Calgon or Reincarnation with these guys!

I originally purchased this recording on vinyl LP and I still have it. When I am traveling this is one CD that is always with me. This is simply Riders at their best -- live. My familiy and I have seen Riders live several times and this recording is what we always listen to on the way home. This work captures the experience, atmosphere and feel of a live Riders show.

"The Cowboy Way" is a wonderful compilation of new and "classic" cowboy music, sung as only Riders in the Sky could do it! It's so easy for me to visualize days spent on horseback under the warm Montana skies, or recall songs sung by the Sons of the Pioneers and Gene Autry that I heard as a small girl listening to the old radio back in Ohio.

The harmony they achieve as a group is almost magical. My favorite song is "Lonely Yukon Stars", but I love them all. Can those guys yodel!!! I hope to get to see the group live this year, so I, too, can chant - "...but it's not the Cowboy way!"

We have had this CD for almost 20 years now. We relished seeing them live in Ft. Collins, CO. This live CD has very much the flavor of being there. In this CD, their wit and humor is at times gut-splitting. Their musicianship is terrific. This is great cowboy music. (NOT country western!) This has made many long road travels shorter. Such wholesome family entertainment, too. We love these guys.

This is by far my favorite Western album ever. I have been listening to it for years since my dad played it for me when I was a kid. Riders in the Sky have a great way of making this album feel like you are right there with them enjoying "Tacos and free beer" around the chuck wagon. As one of their earlier albums (earliest) it is a must have for any Western fan. And now my kids love it as well.

This album combines great melodies and vocal harmonies. Some long time favorites and some really funny comedy. Not a bad song on the whole album. Listening to this album will put a smile on your face and a spring in your step as you whistle "Miss Molly" through the rest of the day.
