I recently bought a Cowboy Studio lighting kit that came with two white translucent umbrellas. Those are OK, but they seem to be better suited for shooting through rather than for bouncing light. This umbrella works much better for me. One side is blacked and the other highly reflective, so it bounces a lot more light onto my subject than the translucent ones. Its shape does a nice job of dispersing the light so I don't get hard shadows. I wish they made this umbrella an option with the kit, because I certainly would have preferred these over what came with it. Not a bad price either. They come in a sturdy, heavy plastic sleeve that I think will be good for storage. I'm pleased and recommend this product.

I do portrait photography as a hobby and was looking at some different options to soften the light. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this umbrella didn't have a steep price tag, but I figured it would be cheaper quality also. Turns out, it is a nice sturdy umbrella and does the job great! Its easy to transport and just big enough to shoot up close portraits pictures. It wouldn't be big enough for a large studio, but for my purposes it worked out great!

Updated Feedback 5/2014,

Okay, so I got a comment asking about the seller, looked at my past invoices an the low quality one was sold by a company called ACM Global, the original one (the good one) was sold and fulfilled by amazon. Check this before you buy this umbrella, you will want to purchase the amazon one.

My original review:

I purchased two of these umbrella's and I purchased them about 8 months apart. The first umbrella I bought about 8 months ago was very high quality and was almost completely opaque with virtually no light escaping the back of the umbrella when the flash lit up, the reflective material was uniform and did not peel off when opening the umbrella, the overall quality of the umbrella was very high.

Fast forward to earlier this month, I needed another umbrella so I just ordered another one figuring I would receive the same umbrella, I did not recieve the same umbrella. It's the same color and size, but the built quality is horrible. The reflective material peeled off of the fabric the first time I opened the umbrella, the umbrella is semi transparent as well and much more light escapes from the back. The quality of the metal is thinner and weaker. I'm not sure where cowboy studio purchases their umbrellas to resell, but they had better go back to the old vendor because these new umbrellas are bad. I doubt this new one will last more than a half dozen shoots before the reflective material is falling to the ground.

I just unpacked the umbrellas and I was pleasantly surprised. The picture on Amazon shows an umbrella with eight ribs. The two that I received each have sixteen ribs made of fiberglass! This means that they have a much smoother curve and should throw a smoother light. The fiberglass is very strong and keeps the weight down. The material and workmanship is a level above what I expected.

I had been considering going with a much more expensive parabolic system, and had been looking carefully at their design. Surprisingly, this appears to be a very close clone (in a smaller diameter) of the Westcott parabolic umbrella.

Nearly everything is made in China these days, so the usual cautions apply: If you get a good one, it is good, however you never know which factory any particular batch of product comes from. The two that I received are excellent quality, sixteen fiberglass ribs and a metal shaft. The exposed ends of the ribs each have a rounded metal tip that provides an anchor point for the fabric and also prevents harsh edges from the fiberglass ribs. Very smooth and classy. I have not spent any time with these yet, but they give the feeling of something that will last.

There isn't much that can go wrong with an umbrella, if it opens and stays open it passes the test. This one does pass. It's big when open and small when closed. I do PR, I'm happy to stick this in a backpack to go and wham-bam hit-and-run the board room. Nice enough so far. Go for it.

For the price I paid for the umbrella i was expecting to get some flimsy stuff, however I was impressed when I got them. They feel really firm and durable, I couldn't believe it. I have purchased umbrellas that cost more than this one and broke in matter of weeks simply from opening and closing them frequently. These seem to be quite different and they're inexpensive too

Used two of these to replace the Cowboy Studio umbrella light package and am very glad I did. The included umbrellas don't really reflect that well and too light gets through. These reflective umbrellas really do the trick and were well worth the purchase.

Very good quality umbrella. love to use in my home studio with constant lighting. Much better than the umbrellas I received with the Cowboy studios lighting package I bought. It really enables me to direct the light more and does not throw light everywhere like the tranpsparent ones you receive with the lighting kit.

To reviewers giving low scores, surely you are kidding, unless the manufacturer is inconsistent. At this price, one should not expect The Crown Jewels. I was very pleasantly surprised at this value: Excellent! My pro photographer wife agrees.

With respect to the low-star reviews, perhaps the seller is guilty of being inconsistent in packaging and coating quality -- not a good thing, since quality is all about consistency. But, in my case and time (Late October 2012), the 2 ordered umbrellas were extremly well packaged and completely wrapped in heavy bubble wrap. The silver coating is very durable, bright and consistent. And the mechanism is well-made.

Others have pointed out that the main shaft is tubular and that is true (most are; others simply have a plug on the open end that makes them appear solid) but the metal is well made and more than adequate...at least on those I received. The operation opening/closing will not adversely affect the well-made articulating elements and their U-shaped capturing joints.

For this money...Far beyond acceptable.

I bought these after purchasing a cheap light kit with white umbrellas. The lights were simply not bright enough to do anything with. I thought for the price what the heck and bought these. Thank goodness because now that cheap kit works awesome.

These umbrellas helped so much.

Would recommend these over the cheap white umbrellas that most kits come with. Definitely worth the money.
