Customer Reviews

The softboxes are difficult to put together properly.
Celeste Thoms
The lighting itself is good, but if you are looking for a portable lighting setup, spend the extra hundred or two.

We ripped the corner pockets trying to insert the rods.

After immense research, I decided to purchase this. I have a small studio in my home maybe 15ft by 10ft with one window. I purchased this item Tuesday night and I received it the following Monday. Shipped by UPS. There were no instructions or invoice in the bag so i decided to find the instructions on YouTube. There are a lot of videos on how to set it up. The first light box was a pain in the butt but then after I figured it out and it was a breeze. After I finished cleaning up my mess I found a little card in the pocket of the bag that said: for instructions please go to [...]. lol kind of found that too late. I was impressed by the carrying bag as well. You can't beat this quality and size of equipment for this price! I do not recommend this to a photographer who plans on traveling with it. It takes too much time to set up and their is too many pieces to bring this around. So, if you are planning to purchase this, you're going to have to keep it set up. I never purchase anything from online without researching it and reviewing the customer thoughts. I must say that from all my research, that Cowboy Studio is one of the best, most reliable companies online. I will be recommending this to my fellow photographers. You will not regret this purchase.

If you're reading this review chances are like me you're a hobbyist. In the sense that we have studios in our home, we're not professionals but we love video editing and still photography.

That said and if you agree, I think it's important to consider this kit in both relationship to the cost and comparisons to the exact same set ups - by pro lighting companies. So I did a bit of research trying to keep it apples to apples - the same two box lights and boom light, as well as the same wattage.

The Norman 4 Mono light 3 soft box studio with boom sells for $3,395. The Smith-Vector, on sale is $999.000. I found others that like the above look much like this CowboyStudio set up but the costs range upwards of 6 grand - it's pointless to mention them all as I hope the point is made, if not blame it on my writing.

So you get this kit for less than the tax you would pay for a professional lighting system.

I now have two studios, both green screen and use Camtasia which is hands down the easiest, richest, and innovative video editing software I've ever used and I've either bought or auditioned most all of them. Their Chromakey is sensational.

I mention this because I'm a puppeteer and although I have CowBoyStudio constant lighting kits with umbrella diffusers shadows are a nightmare to deal with in editing and Chromakey.

Over the years I've bought a bunch of lighting kits and related products from Amazon including a Panasonic Pro AG-HMC40 AVCHD camera at an unbelievable price and it's an unbelievable camera - if only I could learn enough to stop filming everything in automatic.

These are not professional lighting systems and to compare them to pro systems is ludicrous.

like all reviews said, supports (spines) that give shape to softbox are CHEAP and bend badly. Why doesn't someone invent a spring-action pole that fits into the slots easily and snugly? ridiculous. lights are very bright. nice. not a bad set up for the price, but it is clear that they cut corners to save a few dollars here and there, when, for a few dollars more, they could have produced a first-rate product. a shame.

I'm actually waiting for these lights to ship, but I wanted to mention that most reviewers say the bag they come in is built to hold all the gear in all the white boxes they are packaged in - and that it's not practical to carry it this way.

So I ordered the Smith-Victor case that ships with the Smith-Victor light set but is twice the price of these lights. I'm hoping this bag fits all the Cowboy Studio gear (update: it does)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BDG1T8

Shipping on the case was stupid pricey however, $37, so if you can bundle it somehow do so.

I'll come back and review the lights after I receive them.

UPDATE:

Got my lights. Cowboy Studio accidentally sent me the 3000 watt ( 5 sockets in all 3 lights) but they did not send me the boom pole. A call to their headquarters and they quickly put one in the mail.

I set up one softbox. It took a bit of time but I think I can do it quicker next time. The instructions are okay. They did have the lightbulb screw in picture reversed, saying it's appropriate to screw in lights holding th coils rather than the base.

My above case comment is correct, you'd have to leave all components in boxes for the included case to work, so I'm glad I bought the Smith Victor case, all the poles, bases, softboxes and all the lightbulbs (left in boxes) fit in nicely - hoping the boom pole will too when it arrives.

Check all the nuts/bolts on your stands. I had one fall off but I retightened it.

As a video production company we needed lights, a friend suggested Cowboy's, and so we tried them out. Great results, good for the bare minimum. BUT for the price they're worth having on hand to use.
