More About the Author

I was born in California and grew up there on the beaches of SoCal where I used to think I would write humorous social commentaries and pithy columns about life between "here and the pier" in Manhattan Beach.

But then I left. I went away to college and then married and moved to the Midwest. Since then I've been in the Midwest and Montana and made the mental transition to life with four seasons with no trouble at all.

In fact, last time I was in MB I looked at the inlaid terrazzo tiles in the sidewalk on the hill leading down to the pier and thought to myself, "Who on earth would put tiles in the sidewalk? It will be so hard to shovel the snow off!"

See?

Despite my beach upbringing, I was the child of transplanted okies and montanans, and my love of cowboys was apparently bred in the bone. The first man I fell in love with was a cowboy. I was five years old -- and I imprinted on him, following him everywhere, like a duck.

So when I started writing romance fiction years later, there was no question that even my CEOs and beach volleyball players and Greek tycoons were, at their heart, cowboy heroes.

McAllister heroes have a strong sense of honor, determination, competence, and a "get it done" attitude. They are more often lone wolves than they are alphas. They go their own way -- until they meet the woman who makes them want to share their life. And a lone wolf who takes on a spouse has to have some alpha in him. She definitely brings it out.

Writing has been a wonderful opportunity for me to expand my horizons, to learn more about things that interest me. It gives me license to satisfy my curiosity and to meet people from all walks of life. I love it. The ideas never seem to dry up. They are everywhere. I'm looking forward to writing a whole lot more.

If you are reading the Code of the West series than you should already be famliar with Mace and Jenny Nichols. They have known each other for so long and have been married for fourteen years. The only thing that would make their lives complete would be to have children. After putting their family on hold so that they could save money and start a ranch, they have decided that now is the time. Unfortunately, three years later and still no baby. After going to the doctor they discover that Mace is sterile. Mace is the ultimate cowboy-rough, tough, and handsome. Mace feels like less of a man now that he knows he can not father children. His solution is to let Jenny go, so that she can find a man that can give her children. When he files for divorce Jenny is stunned along with all of there friends and family. Everyone knows that they belong together and they all do there best to make Mace see that. The results are heartbreaking and heartwarming. Mace can not see past his own pain to see how bad he is hurting Jenny. It takes a widowed priest and an intelligent ten year old (Becky) to convince Mace that life is nothing without Jenny. Becky has a small story of her own in this book. Becky has been in previous Code of the West books and is the daughter of Taggart. This was an enjoyable book to read.

McAllister is one of my favorite authors, and this book is really well done.

This is #6 in her Code of the West series, so I am assuming that the large cast of secondary characters were covered in those books. I look forward to their release on Kindle. The setting is well crafted; you get a real sense of life on a small ranch. And the epilogue was moving and beautiful.

BUT:

Mace and Jenny have been happily married for fourteen years, when bad news strikes. The problem is that he immediately freaks and makes an huge unilateral decision about how to deal with it. So, what is arguably the worst day in Jenny's life, her husband then makes dramatically worse.

It's heartbreaking, and that's my only problem: I like a happier story, even before the Happily Ever After.

If you don't, or at least don't mind it, there is a lot here to recommend.
