Editorial Reviews

Review

"As written by Gary Phillips (The Jook) and drawn by Brian Hurtt (The Sixth Gun), Cowboys is truly a no-bullshit western in the Budd Boetticher/Randolph Scott tradition only set in the modern day."
-- Nerd of Noir, Spinetingler magazine

[Cowboys] concerns two cops on a collision course...I know...you'll say you already covered similar territory in The Departed, but I'll counter that the sense of scale on this one is pretty grand, covering crime and criminal conspiracies from the street up through the entertainment industry, money laundering and even global terrorism. Watching them chew through the case's hard candy shell toward each other in the chewy center is gonna be epic...I promise.

More About the Author

Weaned on the images of Kirby and Steranko in comics and Hammet and Himes in prose, Gary Phillips was born under a bad sign and only through writing does he hope to get out from under. He is editor of the bestselling anthology Orange County Noir, co-edited with Jervey Tervalon the acclaimed Cocaine Chronicles, and Booklist said of his novel Warlord of Willow Ridge, "Phillips is a veteran crime novelist who creates a plausible post-apocalyptic scenario in which the safety of middle-class America can dissolve in a moment. Exciting, violent, and entertaining." His graphic novel, The Rinse, about a money launderer, was optioned for television. He has short stories upcoming in the anthologies Asian Pulp and Jewish Noir. This is much needed and a pleasure to read. These brothers are very talented and you heads out there should support them by purchasing this book. If you love comics, urban drama, graphic novels then add this to your collection. Phillips and Hurt have a fan in me.

This is one of the most racist and misogynistic works I have read in years. I gritted my teeth and slogged on through the static artwork and terrible pacing, hoping there would be a payoff for my suffering. There was minimal payoff and the story was offensive to the point of incoherency.

Do not read this if you or anyone you love is: Muslim, black, Jewish, Asian (Chinese), a woman, a person with a disability (uses a wheelchair), to name a few groups who suffer constant slurs in the name of "grittiness." Looking back I am surprised, I don't remember any homophobic slurs beyond a throw away line about the R&B singer having "lesbo" fans.

You finish this with GSR all over your face and your hair blown straight back like you just got off the Formula Rossa 150 MPH rollercoaster in Dubai. Gary Phillips brings it, baby. And he brings it hard.
